Does Friendship Among Women Really Exist? The Answer Might Surprise You
‘A woman is a woman’s worst enemy’ is something all of us have been listening to since the days we used to tie two little ponytails on our head and get excited at the sight of those icy orange sticks. But most of us have since then experienced quite a few wonderful friendships with our girlfriends, which have stood the test of time and distance. In a way, we can say that we already know the answer, which is a rather way too obvious Y-E-S.
But what do the skeptics have to say about two women being friends? Can they really ever be friends? Well, the answer is going to shock you!
Women Cannot Be Friends With Each Other!
At least that’s what columnist Tony Serpa has to say. Serpa provides the explanation that what women have with each other is not friendship exactly but rather a relationship of convenience. He gives an example of a typical school setting to establish his point. Typically, the popular girls are found next to each other, forming a gang, while the brainy ones do the same. He also says that what brings these women together in a cluster is their shared dislike of the other group.
Another reason why Serpa believes women cannot be friends is that women in a group will take the opportunity to criticize a woman in their group without hesitation.
While Serpa’s opinions may sound quite harsh, we have found ample evidence of this kind of behavior among women in popular media. Take, for example, the movie Mean Girls! You can evidently see the ‘popular’ girl gang being bitchy about everybody else!
But that is just one side of the coin. And you and I, we both know that friendship between women not only exists but is one of the most beautiful relationships in the world! And the popular media acknowledges and celebrates that fact too! Which is why we have movies like Thelma & Louise and Bridesmaids.
Even our home-grown B-Town bears testimony to quite a few rock solid female friendships that have lasted for years such as Sonam Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez, and Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora! We also have Deepika Padukone and Shahana Goswami on the list!
And, of course, who can forget the friendship between Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe in F.R.I.E.N.D.S? Sure, the girls went through some crazy phases of jealousy, bitchiness, and what not but they always came back together, deepening their bond and ensuring it lasts a lifetime.
Conclusion? Friendships between women do exist. But if you’re feeling a little shaky and under confident about your girl bonding because of what we have just said, we have got just the perfect solution for you. Just continue reading!
If you and your BFF have done most of these things, you can be sure that your bond is never going to die!
Just like lunatics and geniuses display certain characteristic signs, so do women best friends! And if you have done most of the things laid out right here, you can be confident that your friendship is real and not just based on the mutual dislike of that nasty girl – even though that’s how it may have started.
- Shared clothes! Or even cosmetics! You guys can share just about everything with each other because you’re just that comfortable.
- Had food from the same plate and spoon without bothering! The concept of “jhootha khana” is non-existent in your friendship. You can even snatch food from each other’s mouth if you want to!
- Know each other’s families pretty well. You guys frequently have slumber parties, and you’ve stayed over at your besties’ house so many times (and they at yours) that their families have come to accept you as a part of their own!
- Flipped a coin over who gets to date the hot guy. Even though you guys share everything with each other, you know where to draw the line. After all, boys are not worth jeopardizing your friendship over, are they? No, ma’am. So, when the two of you end up finding the same guy cute at the bar, you just flip a coin and let fate decide who gets to date him.
- Embarrassed each other publicly! If you get the chance to make fun of your gal pal, you’re not going to let it go, especially if you can embarrass them in public. Toilet humor is as much your thing as boys’!
And they are so many other things you may have done that are unique to your friendship and make it all the more special. In sickness and in health, you know you are going to stand by each other and be best friends forever.
