Wheel Of Fortune Tarot: Meaning, Upright & Reversed Guide

The Wheel of Fortune stands as the tenth card in the Major Arcana, embodying the relentless motion of fate and the ebb and flow of life’s fortunes. This card captures the essence of unpredictability, reminding us that prosperity and hardship are transient states in an ever-turning cycle.

Visual Elements and Their Hidden Depths

Central to the card is a massive wheel, often adorned with cryptic inscriptions and surrounded by enigmatic figures. The wheel itself divides into layers: an outer rim etched with letters like TORA or YHWH, symbolizing divine law and cosmic order; a middle band marked by alchemical symbols for the four elements; and an inner core with spokes evoking seasonal rhythms.

Atop the wheel perches a Sphinx, gripping a sword that cuts through illusion, representing wisdom’s grasp on mystery. Descending on one side is a snake, embodying transformation and descent into the material realm, while Anubis rises on the other, guiding souls through transitions as a psychopomp. These elements underscore the card’s theme of perpetual motion, where ascent inevitably leads to descent.

In the card’s corners dwell four winged beings: a human/angel for Aquarius, lion for Leo, bull for Taurus, and eagle for Scorpio. Linked to the fixed zodiac signs, they hold scrolls of the Torah, signifying stability and eternal knowledge amid chaos. Clouds envelop the scene, tying it to the air element and mental discernment in facing fate’s whims.

Core Themes of Change and Impermanence

The Wheel teaches that nothing endures forever—victories fade, losses reverse. It draws from medieval traditions where the wheel illustrated fortune’s capriciousness, a memento mori against hubris. In modern readings, it signals turning points: unexpected opportunities or disruptions that propel growth.

This card aligns with Kaph, the Hebrew letter for ‘palm,’ hinting at the hand—divine or human—that influences the spin. It balances determinism and free will, urging adaptability over control.

Upright Position: Embracing the Turn

• Luck and Opportunity: Upright, the Wheel heralds positive shifts, serendipitous events, or karmic rewards aligning in your favor.
• Cycles of Life: It marks endings leading to beginnings, like career pivots or relationship evolutions.
• Destiny at Play: Trust the process; resistance prolongs discomfort, while flow invites abundance.

Reversed Position: Stagnation and Resistance

• Bad Luck or Delays: Reversed, it warns of setbacks, feeling stuck, or repeated negative patterns.
• Resistance to Change: Clinging to the past blocks progress; surrender is key to realignment.
• Breaking Cycles: Opportunity to interrupt harmful loops through conscious action.

Wheel Across Life’s Domains

Historical Roots and Evolution

Originating in late medieval decks like the Visconti-Sforza, the Wheel echoed Fortune’s wheel in literature and art, symbolizing monarchy’s rise and fall. Renaissance decks amplified esoteric layers with Kabbalistic and alchemical motifs. Rider-Waite-Smith’s 1909 version crystallized modern imagery, blending Egyptian, Christian, and zodiac symbols for richer interpretation.

Today, it resonates in pop culture—from game shows to philosophy—reminding us of life’s roulette-like unpredictability.

Practical Guidance for Wheel Encounters

When the Wheel appears, prepare for flux:

• Stay flexible: Rigid plans crumble; pivot gracefully.
• Observe signs: Synchronicities signal the turn.
• Meditate on cycles: Journal past rises and falls to spot patterns.
• Affirm adaptation: “I flow with life’s rhythms, trusting the wheel’s wisdom.”

In spreads, its position amplifies change: near The Tower, expect upheaval; with The Sun, joyful shifts.

Connecting with the Wheel’s Energy

To invoke its positive spin, create a Wheel altar: place a spinning top, elemental representations (crystals for earth, feathers for air), and zodiac tokens. Visualize the wheel turning favorably during full moons, when cycles peak.

Journal prompt: “What am I releasing to welcome fortune’s next phase?” This fosters agency within destiny.

Common Misconceptions Debunked

• Not Just Luck: Beyond chance, it emphasizes preparedness meeting opportunity.
• Not Fatalistic: While cycles turn, choices steer the ride.
• Reversed Isn’t Doom: A call to action, not permanent misfortune.
