Top Hydro Characters in Genshin Impact Ranked

Hydro remains one of the most versatile elements in Genshin Impact, enabling powerful reactions like Vaporize, Freeze, and Bloom while offering strong healers, DPS units, and off-field applicators. This ranking evaluates all playable Hydro characters based on their damage output, utility, ease of use, and meta relevance in endgame content such as the Spiral Abyss. Factors like scaling, team synergy, and investment requirements shape their positions.

Understanding Hydro’s Role in the Meta

Hydro characters excel in enabling elemental reactions that amplify team damage. Vaporize doubles Pyro or Cryo damage, Freeze locks enemies for Dendro or Electro follow-ups, and Hyperbloom/Burgeon provide AoE control. Top Hydro units often feature consistent off-field application or massive on-field DPS, making them staples in nearly every high-level team comp.

Recent updates have introduced HP-scaling mechanics and new reaction amplifiers, elevating certain 5-star characters while keeping classic 4-stars viable on budgets. This list ranks from strongest to weakest, with build tips and synergies for each.

S-Tier: The Absolute Powerhouses

These characters define the current Hydro meta, delivering unmatched damage or utility that justifies heavy investment.

1. Neuvillette – The Dragon Sovereign’s Might

Neuvillette, the 5-star catalyst user from Fontaine, tops the charts as the premier **Main DPS**. His charged attacks scale off HP, unleashing devastating AoE Hydro beams that ignore enemy defenses when charged fully. Paired with HP% sands, HP% goblet, and Healing Bonus circlet, he hits absurd numbers even at C0.

• Strengths: Insane single-target and AoE damage; self-healing via Bond of Life; easy to build with HP-focused artifacts like Marechaussee Hunter.
• Weaknesses: Long charged attack animations vulnerable to interruption; requires high ER for burst uptime.

Best teams: Neuvillette + Furina (buffer) + Kazuha (VV shred) + Jean (battery/heal). His sustained DPS surpasses traditional on-field Hydro like Ayato.

2. Mualani – Wavebreaker Extraordinaire

The 5-star claymore catalyst from Natlan, Mualani shines as a **Main DPS** with HP-scaling nukes. Her Elemental Skill creates a surfing state for mobile, high-mobility attacks that deal massive AoE bursts. Max HP builds (e.g., HP% 4-piece Obsidian Codex) make her a one-button damage machine.

• Synergies: Thrives in Mono-Hydro or Vaporize with Chevreuse/Xiangling.

Mualani’s mobility decimates overworld bosses, making her ideal for exploration.

A-Tier: Meta Staples

Highly reliable picks that slot into most teams without issue.

3. Yelan – Stealthy Sub-DPS Queen

This 5-star bow wielder excels as **Sub-DPS/Support**, applying rapid off-field Hydro via her Burst dice that follow the active character. Her Skill provides a dash for mobility and initial Hydro application.

Build: 4-piece Heart of Depth, Hydro DMG% Goblet, Crit Circlet. Her damage rivals main DPS off-field.

• Teams: National (Raiden/Xingqiu/Yelan/Bennett) or Aggravate (Dendro + Yelan).

4. Kamisato Ayato – Elegant Blade Master

Ayato’s 5-star sword kit focuses on **Main DPS** with his Shunsuiken state, raining Hydro swords during Skill. High base attack and easy Hydro infusion make him a Vaporize monster.

Signature: Hamayumi for Crit Rate. Teams with Yun Jin for normals boost.

5. Tartaglia (Childe) – Versatile Harbinger

The 5-star bow/claymore hybrid offers **Main DPS/Sub-DPS** modes. Ranged stance for application, melee for bursts. Complex but rewarding in Vaporize.

B-Tier: Strong Niche Performers

6. Xingqiu – Off-Field Reaction Enabler

The 4-star sword support remains a meta kingpin. His Rain Swords trigger on ally normals, providing Hydro app, damage reduction, and minor healing.

Sacrificial Sword C6 version is BIS. Essential in 90% of reaction teams.

7. Furina – Versatile Buffer

5-star sword support/debuffer. Her Burst summons Salon Members for team-wide DMG% buffs, scaling with HP drain. Pairs perfectly with Neuvillette.

8. Nilou – Bloom Specialist

5-star dancer for **Sub-DPS** in Bountiful Cores (Bloom). Her Bloom rings deal bonus damage, but she’s niche outside.

C-Tier: Situational Picks

9. Mona – Utility Enabler

5-star catalyst with strong Hydro app via Burst omen. Omen buff amps team Vaporize. Exploration god, but outclassed in combat.

10. Candace – Niche Shield/Support

4-star polearm. Boosts infused normals in melee stance. Best in Freeze teams.

11. Barbara – Budget Healer

4-star catalyst healer with HoD for some DPS. Slow app limits meta use.

D-Tier: Limited Utility

12. Hydro Traveler – Free Sub-DPS

5-star sword. Decent plunge DPS but low multipliers.

13. Kokomi – Healer with Drawbacks

5-star catalyst healer. Great in Freeze/Bloom but squishy and ER-hungry.

Team Composition Guide

Hypercarry: Neuvillette/Furina/Kazuha/Baizhu.
Double Hydro: Mualani/Yelan/Xiangling/Bennett.
Budget National: Xiangling/Xingqiu/Yelan/Fischl.

Build Tips for Success

• Focus ER on off-field (180-220%).
• HP sands for scalers like Neuvillette.
• Weapons: Prioritize Crit/HP/DMG%.
