Rajamouli knew his wife Rama for quite a long time since Rama was music director M. M. Keeravani’s (Rajamouli’s cousin) wife Sreevalli’s younger sister. Rama was already married when the duo first met, and she even had a son. It is said that somewhere around the year 2000, Rama and her then husband filed for a divorce, which led to a bitter settlement but thankfully left her as the sole custodian of her son. During this tough phase of her life, Rajamouli stood by her side, and over the course of time, he realised that the conditions were growing conducive for him to make a proposal to Rama. S.S. Rajamouli finally proposed to Rama around 2001. The Rama Rajamouli marriage was a simple court marriage the same year, which was only attended by close family members. In an interview, Rajamouli has often shared that Rama’s divorcee status did not hamper his affection towards her, and he was ready to accept her with her son from previous marriage. The love between the pair was quite credible, and right after the Rama Rajamouli marriage, Rajamouli made it a point to have her accompany him to movie sets. Little did he know that he would soon find himself a new costume designer.
It was 2003, and Rajamouli was working on his second Telugu film. It was one of those film shooting days when his wife had accompanied him. The costumes for the film had arrived, and being the director, Rajamouli was extremely disappointed by the look of the costumes. In spite of being discontented by the costume designer’s work, he was having a hard time pointing it out what exactly was wrong with those garbs. His wife Rama immediately came to his rescue, and briskly pointed out the shortcomings in the ensemble of costumes, which turned out to be exactly what Rajamouli had felt. That day marked the foray of Rama into the world of costume designing, and since then she has been the staple costumer designer for most of Rajamouli’s films. In an interview once, she shared that she did not become a costume designer because she wanted to be one but because her husband wanted someone who could read and understand his mind the best. Rama also added that she is keen on being a costume designer only for her husband since she feels a sense of connection with her husband, which she may not with some other filmmaker. The pair is surely made for each other and their dedication towards understanding each other is perhaps the best part of the Rama Rajamouli marriage.

“He has a command over each department. He’s the captain of the ship literally. He’s very clear about what exactly he wants and how to get it.”
