Sridevi was the reigning queen of all major film industries in the late 80s and early 90s. She actually must be called an empress than a queen because she ruled the roost not just in Hindi but in Telugu and Tamil film industries as well – not to mention her roles in critically acclaimed Malayalam films which brought her name and fame all over India. So it was no wonder that the news of the Sridevi wedding sent shock waves all across the land! Boney Kapoor was a star producer – delivering hit after hit with his brother Anil Kapoor and other stars that were at their peak during this time. He was also the producer of the cult hit, sci-fi film Mr.India starring his brother Anil Kapoor and future wife, Sridevi. Mr. India was helmed by the Academy Award winning director, Shekar Kapur. Both Sridevi and Boney Kapoor were at their zenith when, after years of knowing each other, when love blossomed between the two.

Sridevi and Boney Kapoor were in their own worlds – working 24 hours a day. It was a time when the top actors, actresses, directors and producers were belting out almost 10 films a year each – that’s like working on two to three films simultaneously! Something our generation cannot comprehend and the funny fact is that movies at that time actually had a plot, a storyline and still made space for 5 songs and 3 fights! It was the crazy 90’s after all. Sridevi was juggling between Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films – all with top actors of the time. Many people in the industry and outside believed that Boney Kapoor had met Sridevi during the making of Mr India, around 28 years ago – in 1987. But as told by Boney himself, the real story is that Boney had been in awe of Sridevi for a very long time – long before they made that film together. In an interview after their marriage, Boney admitted that he fell in love with Sridevi after watching her in a Tamil film in the late 1970’s. It was a time when the industries were a lot more porous than they are now. A hit film in one language was quickly remade by another producer in another language and quickly lapped up by the audience. He says that after being floored by her beauty and performance in that film, he had personally travelled to Chennai (Madras then) to meet and congratulate her. But unfortunately he couldn’t meet her as she was away in Singapore for an outdoor film shoot. A few months after his not so fruitful Bombay to Madras trip, he watched Sridevi’s debut Hindi film Solva Sawan (the 1979 critically acclaimed hit film directed by the ace Tamil director P. Bharatiraja where Sridevi starred alongside the Marathi/Hindi actor, director and producer Amol Parekar) and he says that is when he realised that he really wanted to work with her. Luckily, one day he meet her on the sets of on-going film of hers at the film city. Boney lovingly recollected that she was an introvert all through and wouldn’t talk to strangers. He tried to get her into the conversation and he says that she had talked to him in half-broken English and a little bit of Hindi. Imagine that!

Unlike these days when actors and actresses have well-oiled public relations teams and managers at their disposal, earlier it was mostly family members who took care of the actors needs. For actresses though, it was almost always their mothers who doubled up as their PR agents and managers. Boney soon realised that in order to get closer to Sridevi, he would have to impress her mother.

Boney offered Sridevi a role in Mr. India, and her mother wasn’t particularly impressed with it. She wanted to avoid and as a strategy to decline indirectly, she quoted an exorbitant fee of Rs.10 lacs for Sridevi to do the film, which by any standard was almost double the take- home for a top actress back then. Boney Kapoor, who was hell bent on doing the film with Sridevi and also with the plan to impress his future MiL, offered a lac more, that’s Rs.11 lacs for doing the film with his banner. Her mother was stunned and immediately impressed, because producers then, now and probably forever are penny-pinching.
It didn’t stop at that, now that he was past her mother, he wanted to impress Sridevi, and probably as he says – he was more enamoured by her than wanting to fall in love with her. After all – Boney Kapoor was married to Mona Shourie Kapoor at the time, and had two kids from that marriage – the Bollywood actor and one of the leading young men in the industry – Arjun Kapoor and his younger sister, Anshula Kapoor.

The large hearted producer ensured that his heroine felt comfortable on set. He didn’t stop with the Rs.11 lac fee, he made available for her exclusive use – a vanity room on the set and other things that only heroes at the time were provided. This, by the way was at a time when vanity vans and personal assistants were unheard of, when film units worked, ate and slept as a team – in a common place. And here was Bony, treating Sridevi like a princess. As he says – she slowly got closer and they became good friends.

It didn’t stop at that – Sridevi was shooting Yash Chorpa’s Chadni in Switzeland when Boney Kapoor flew down to just see her, meet her and spend time with her. This was a time when flying was so expensive that an international ticket costed a fortune. Later on, when Sridevi’s mother was ill, and she was away in at a shoot, Boney was the one who stood by her. Supporting Sridevi emotionally, mentally and as some say – even financially. That was the time when she Sridevi realised that he was somebody special. But there were rumours flying in the air – that Mithun Chakraborthy and Sridevi were in a relationship. It is said that Mithun was so insecure about the closeness between Sridevi and Boney that he apparently made her tie a Raki to Boney Kapoor. Until then, Boney and Mithun had been close friends, but their relationship had slowly turned sour. But all wasn’t going well between Mithun Da and Sri, though some reports even stated at the time that they had got secretly married. It was a very trying time as Mithun was already married – and his wife (actress Yogeeta Bali) didn’t approve of their relationship, they broke up as per reports in the media.

Boney was going through his share of personal problems, all wasn’t going well at home and his wife had decided to stay on at his place with his parents even though he wanted to move on in life.

Both Sri and Boney realised that they were meant to be together and finally – though there was widespread disapproval to their relationship – the Sridevi Boney Kapoor marriage was finally becoming a reality.

It is said that Sridevi’s elder daughter Janhvi is interested in getting into films and we’d say it is only natural, coming from such an illustrious filmi family. Sridevi and Boney have produced films together and Sridevi made a spectacular comeback with a woman-centric role in the 2012 superhit film English Vinglish directed by Gauri Shinde, the wife of another talented producer- director R. Balki. Boney Kapoor who was going through a lean patch redeemed himself with Salman Khan’s hit, Wanted and has even made a film called Tevar with Arjun Kapoor, his son.
