The future Mrs and Mr Behl first met on the sets of the 1994 movie Naraaz, through Goldie’s sister and business partner Shrishti Arya, who was friends with Sonali Bendre (who is also her best friend as she has repeatedly indicated in many interviews) . It was love at first sight for Goldie as he recollected in an interview that he fell head over heels the moment he saw her. It was also the way she ate her food, at a very slow pace and in a delicate and slow manner that he found quite endearing. Well, love has no logic. While his comment made Sonali furious, it was the conversation that broke the ice between the two and they slowly became friends. Interestingly most of their conversation hovered around food. They enjoy their food and as they say a couple that cooks together, stays together.

Later in 1998 Sonali was signed for the film Angaaray. It had Akshay Kumar in the lead along with Sonali Bendre and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Incidentally, Goldie was assisting Mahesh during the shoot was entrusted with relaying the director’s messages to the actors. It was another chance for the future couple to interact on a regular basis and cement their friendship.

Later on, when the AB Corp. Production Major Saab was happening, Goldie used to frequently visit the set as he and Abhishek Bachchan were childhood friends. The film had Sonali Bendre and Amitabh Bachchan playing important roles. Unfortunately the film bombed but as Goldie says, “what the heck, it is just a film and highs and lows happen. It will still be a memorable time because it really gave us a chance to bond and our love blossomed!”

Love Blossoms

With time, their friendship turned into romance. But as Goldie said “initially, the affections were one sided. She wasn’t ready but I didn’t give up on her though. Even my mom asked me to keep on it.” She really liked Sonali and for the first time in his life, the ever-so carefree son heeded his mom’s advice. The couple were in love and slowly realised they were compatible and meant to be together. They met often, went out together and enjoyed spending time with each other. The families gradually agreed and they were locked in! Sonali at that time was on the top of her game, juggling between Telugu, Tamil and Hindi industries and working with big stars like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna to Akshay Kumar, Nagarjuna, Salman Khan, Sharukh khan and others. Goldie was affable and his warm personality won Sonali’s heart. The video above is just one proof of the awesome and lively bond that the two share.

The couple were blessed with a baby boy three years after marriage. Sonali Bindre gave birth to her son, Ranveer, on the 11th of August, 2005 at Mumbai’s famous Breach Candy Hospital at Cumballa Hill. Doting father and husband Goldie says “Our son Ranveer is the most special gift Sonali has ever given me. She’s a hands-on mother.” Sonali on the other hand says Goldie is the loving father, the one who spoils the kid with love, not that she doesn’t enjoy the two boys bonding beautifully, it is just that she wants Ranveer to grow up responsibly. Being a star child isn’t easy and nothing should be taken for granted is what the loving mother has to say.

Goldie says Sonali is a much better actress now, because she has the power to choose and be selective. Earlier, there was a huge gap between what she wanted to do and what she was actually doing as an actor. Subtle acting and understated performances weren’t considered good acting back then.

But things have greatly improved; things are different at the movies now. There is a vision and substance behind an actresses role too. She will definitely have more fun working in films in this time and age. Coming from a middle class background, she says she knows the value of everything and how you’d be treated if you’re successful and when you aren’t so successful. The couple not just complement each other as individuals but make a great pair. We wish Sonali Bendre and Goldie Behl all the luck in this world as hope to see Sonali make her big screen comeback soon.
