The wait is over for fans of the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight. Its highly anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, has launched directly into Xbox Game Pass, allowing subscribers to dive into its haunting world without any additional purchase. Optimized for Xbox Series X|S with stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals and smooth 60 FPS performance, this action-adventure gem promises hours of exploration, combat, and mystery.

Launch Details and Availability

Hollow Knight: Silksong became available on September 4 across multiple platforms through Game Pass, marking a major day-one release for Microsoft’s subscription service. Players with an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription can download and play immediately on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, and even via cloud streaming. This inclusion spans console, PC, and cloud access, making it accessible to a broad audience without barriers.

The game’s arrival was first teased during the Xbox E3 2022 showcase, where it was confirmed as a day-one title, building immense hype over the years. Now realized, it joins other fresh additions to the September 2025 Game Pass lineup, solidifying its place as a cornerstone release. Note that it requires Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass tiers—standard plans like Core or Essential do not include it at launch, though future expansions could change this.

Who You Play As: Hornet’s Epic Journey

Step into the needle-wielding boots of Hornet, the fierce princess-protector from the original Hollow Knight. Bound by her royal lineage and haunted by echoes of her past, Hornet embarks on a perilous pilgrimage through an unfamiliar kingdom dominated by silk and song. Captured and thrust into this strange realm, she must battle formidable enemies, unravel ancient secrets, and ascend to the kingdom’s foreboding peak.

This vast, haunted land features diverse biomes like mossy grottos, coral forests, and gleaming citadels, each teeming with dangers and discoveries. As a sequel, Silksong expands on the Metroidvania formula with fluid combat, intricate platforming, and deep lore that ties back to Hallownest while forging new paths. Hornet’s arsenal and abilities evolve through the adventure, offering a fresh take on the series’ signature challenge.

Gameplay Mechanics and New Features

Silksong refines the core loop of exploration, fighting, and survival that made its predecessor a modern classic. Players will hunt, survive, and vanquish foes in a world where every shadow hides a threat. Hornet’s movements are precise and deadly, emphasizing silk-based traversal mechanics unique to this kingdom’s aesthetic.

• Combat Evolution: Enhanced needle attacks, new weapons, and combo systems reward skillful play.
• Exploration Depth: Non-linear maps with hidden paths, bosses, and collectibles encourage thorough scouting.
• Atmospheric Storytelling: Environmental narratives and subtle echoes reveal the kingdom’s tragic history.
• Technical Excellence: 4K/60 FPS on Series X|S ensures buttery-smooth action even in intense battles.

The game’s haunting soundtrack and hand-drawn art style immerse players in a melancholic beauty, blending triumph with tension. For newcomers, it stands alone, but veterans will appreciate callbacks to the Void and Hallownest.

Game Pass Tiers: Which One Do You Need?

Subscribers to Ultimate or PC tiers get seamless access, with cloud play extending reach to phones or unsupported PCs. Purchasing outright is also an option for non-subscribers, available on Xbox stores alongside the Pass.

Beyond Game Pass: Multi-Platform Reach

While Game Pass steals the spotlight for Xbox and PC users, Silksong spans wider: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 also host the title. This cross-platform strategy ensures no fan misses out, though Game Pass offers the most value for Microsoft ecosystem players. The sequel’s development by Team Cherry emphasizes quality over haste, delivering a polished experience years in the making.

Why Silksong is a Must-Play Sequel

Building on Hollow Knight’s legacy—over 100 industry awards—Silksong delivers bigger scope without losing soul. Its day-one Game Pass debut democratizes access, letting more players experience Hornet’s saga. Expect challenging bosses, ability-gated progression, and a narrative payoff that rivals the original’s emotional depth.
