Shilpa Shirodkar Wedding Saga: 90s Revisited Again!

You may remember Shilpa Shirodkar from her popularity on film and television in the 1990s, but it was actually the 1989 movie Bhrashtachar in which she excellently portrayed and played the role of a blind girl and it was also the movie in which Shilpa made her début.

Shilpa would then be cast alongside Anil Kapoor in the smash hit movie Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), which would go on to bring her many accolades, along with all of her roles in films like Trinetra (1991), Hum (1991), Khuda Gawah (1992), Aankhen (1993), Pehchaan (1993), Gopi Kishan (1994), Bewafa Sanam (1995) and especially Mrityudand (1997).

Her last movie before taking a 13 year long hiatus was Gaja Gamini in 2000. She has shared the screen a total of 9 times opposite Mithun Chakraborty, a pairing that has come to be appreciated by critics and fans alike.

An Extended Hiatus

The reason for her unprecedented 13 year hiatus, of course, was the Shilpa Shirodkar Wedding to Apresh Ranjit, and the subsequent happy marriage. Also because she wasn’t in India at the time, or for a while after. Shilpa tied the knot with Apresh, a merchant and investment banker who amassed his fortune out of London working with one of the UK’s biggest banks – Barclays. Apresh had been settled in the UK all this time.

The Apresh Ranjit Shilpa Shirodkar Wedding happened on 11 July 2000, coinciding with her Gaja Gamini release date. The wedding was a grand affair, but it was not in London, rather in Mumbai, and the couple returned to the UK, leading Shilpa away from her show business career, to focus on themselves and starting a family.

And that’s exactly what they did, considering the couple had a child in 2003, three years after their marriage – a daughter named Anushka.

It wasn’t just the UK that the couple made their home. Apresh’s job as a high profile investment banker took him to, among other places, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Addicted To Mumbai

Between taking care of little Anushka, caring for Apresh and generally running the house in its entirety, it’s hard being a full time mom. However, Shilpa admitted in an interview that she spends up to two and a half months away from Apresh in Mumbai, living with her family. She and her husband have had many an argument about why she needs to be away from “home” for so long, but as Shilpa puts it, “Mumbai life is an addiction! You have to get your fix.”

The duo continued to enjoy their London family life, up until 2013, when (her daughter being 10 years old now) Shilpa decided to re-enter her acting career, which had been in a complete hold for the entire length of her married life so far.

Remembering Old Friends

Shilpa Shirodkar In Recent Years

Shilpa may not have much time to herself after she is done dealing with the needs of her daughter and husband but she is making up for all the lost time. She had mentioned that Anushka has “not given her time to adjust to the UK,” but this Bollywood actress always has a bit of time for old friends, and it seems that the feeling is mutual.

Madhoo and Madhuri Dixit NeNe are the ones that she stays in touch with, but most of all (and of course) it’s Mithun Chakraborty that manages to meet up the busy housewife for a meal any time he happens to be in London.

She also fondly recalls how Sanjay Dutt – when shooting for an Abbas–Mustan film in London – had called and inquired about her. “It’s good to see people value old friends” she says.
