Rani Mukerji Marriage: Rani is one of those faces that you can never forget after seeing once. She is one of the most versatile and talented actors in Bollywood and remains one of the most enduring faces, even after several ups and downs in her long career. Whether she portrays the hot college heart throb like in Kuch Kuch Hota Hain or a rape victim forced into marrying the perpetrator like in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, she carries off all roles with great ease and panache. Known for her characteristic, scratchy, “i’m-recovering-from-a-cold” voice, she was initially written off by numerous film critics as being “Kajol’s poor cousin”. But through her sheer hard work and attention to detail, she has managed to make a lasting mark for herself in the Bollywood industry. She admits to being obsessive about tiny details of her craft and spends a great deal of time honing her talents. As is the case in the media today, a woman’s looks are constantly scrutinized to the tiniest of details and Rani was also criticized for being short, dark and chubby. In an age where everyone wants that “perfect” size zero figure and go under the knife to achieve that perfect look, Rani still remains true to herself and is unabashed about it. It’s no wonder then, that the Aditya Chopra – Rani Mukerji marriage was -true to her form- both a hush-hush affair, and a topic of wide public interest!

While most of her contemporaries like Kajol or even Madhuri Dixit tied the knot many years ago, Rani was one woman who was bold enough to stay single, well into her thirties. We all know what a challenge that can be in our society, so we appreciate her boldness! There were several rumours adrift about Rani Mukerji’s alleged affair with director and producer Aditya Chopra. Both Rani and Aditya had been silent about these rumours, which only fuelled more speculations in the media. Rani was criticized for being a “home wrecker” because Aditya had been married to Payal Khanna for the better part of a decade. But finally, last year, the two of them tied the knot and made it official – they are in love!

Given that both of them are famous, they have been fiercely protective about their personal life. Reading what the media has been writing about them, one can totally understand why this has been so. When Rani was seen a couple of years ago at Aditya Chopra’s house, celebrating Diwali, the news spread like wild fire, fuelling a game of “will-they or wont-they” in the media. In fact, when Kajol was on of the show Koffee With Karan, she said the question she would most like to ask Rani was “When are you going to get married?” She was one of India’s most sexy actors and this was the question the entire country wanted to ask her. Well, the media and all of us can rest easy now that we have a solid answer. But what many may not know is how this love bloomed between them and how their wedding was. Well, we are here with some answers.

Rani Mukerji Marriage – Jab They Met

When Rani and Adi met, it was no grand occasion or something that shook their worlds. Rani had just acted in some movies. Aditya Chopra had risen to new level of fame with the recent success of his classic film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Rani was going to the Sampan Hotel in Mumbai, and knew that Adi Chopra would be there. As for Adi, he had expected her to come over and talk to him, as would be expected of any young starlet in the presence of a famous director. But Rani surprised him by not doing this and vying for a role. He took an instant liking to her, and was impressed by this. This is what led Aditya Chopra to recommend her to Karan Johar for her now famous role as Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He was also impressed by her performance in her debut film and felt that she thoroughly deserved this. And so, right from the beginning, their relationship was characterized by a deep respect for each other. But it was not love at first sight, and their relationship remained platonic for many years after they had met.

Then They Were Just Friends

Once they had been acquainted with each other, Adi and Rani did have a nice bond with each other, and became friends. After this, they had the chance to work with each other in a large number of movies under the YRF banner, like Saathiya, Hum Tum, Bunty Aur Babli. But nothing romantic really blossomed between them at this time. Aditya Chopra was still married to another woman. Rani adds that she did not believe in dating the producer that she had to work with because this might complicate things. They would often hang out with each other, and found that they truly enjoyed each other’s company. But Rani says that for a very long time, she could not think of Aditya in a romantic way.

Well, Aditya Chopra was divorced from his first wife in 2009. Once this was finalized, Adi was going through a very rough time in his life. Rani too was on a low. They would often meet up to talk and support each other through these tough times. This was when they both realized that there could be something more to their relationship than just friendship. Adi had always felt that she was very different from all the other actresses he had met. It was in this period, post Adi’s divorce that the two of them decided to start dating. Around this time, there were many rumours that Adi’s had gotten a divorce because of his relationship with Rani. Rani says about these rumours, The universe around us is responsible in bringing us together by insinuating us.”

Apparently, Aditya Chopra is a true romantic. Which shouldn’t be all that surprising, I guess, looking at his movies. Before their first date, Aditya had asked her parent’s permission to date their daughter. This thrilled Rani to bits, because she is very attached to her parents. Her parents too were very happy to know of the growing love between the two of them. Rani and Adi always kept mum about their relationship because they wanted to see where it would lead them. They did not want to make any announcements until they were sure that they were meant to be.

Rani Mukerji Marriage – The Fairytale Wedding

Most people do get married, but not a lot of them get to have their dream wedding with the dream guy. But Rani Mukerji is definitely not one of those people. Adi and Rani got hitched on 21 April, 2014. But before this, the media did get a whiff of the impending nuptials. Many leading media houses had announced that the couple would be tying the knot in Jodhpur in February. But these two love birds outsmarted them all by having a secret wedding in Italy!

Aditya Chopra’s first wedding was done in the traditional Punjabi way. But this time around, he wanted something different and something special for his beautiful bride-to-be. Showing that he is a true romantic, Adi apparently planned the whole wedding out himself! He had always known that Rani wanted a traditional Bengali wedding, and this is exactly what he gave her.

He took time to meticulously read up on Bengali customs, so that he would understand them. He said to Rani, “I will do whatever you tell me to on that day.” They had a Bengali pandit flown in all the way to Italy to ensure that everything went smoothly. Right from the logistics to the guest list, Adi took care of every single thing.

And could anyone have chosen a better venue than Italy, which is a country that truly celebrates love in all its myriad forms. And they got married in a small countryside in the heart of Italy – a little place known as Cortona in Tuscany. This place shot to fame after it formed the setting of the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. Set on a gorgeous hillside, Cortona also boasts of numerous quaint cathedrals and some great examples of Renaissance architecture.

The Aditya – Rani Mukerji wedding was a very small and intimate affair, with around 20 people invited for the big day. Even Kajol, who is her colleague as well as cousin, was not a part of the intimate celebrations. Sabyasachi was flown in to dress Rani for her big day. She wore a gorgeous traditional red and gold Benarsi saree for her wedding, complete with a Bengali mukut. The couple were very strict about keeping the media out of their wedding, and hence the Aditya Chopra – Rani Mukerji marriage photos were to remain a personal treasure for the couple, and while we respect that, we have only our imaginations to  wonder how breathtaking she must have looked in her bridal finery. Aditya also looked quite handsome in his cream dhoti and kurta, which had some exquisite golden embroidery on it.

While talking about her wedding, Rani happily gushed, “It was like a dream wedding, I might sound corny, what else could be the marriage of a Yash Chopra bahu? It had to be romantic and it was at an Italian country side, in a place called Cortona. It was one of the most famous places to get married. I got married in a Bengali way and it was really nice to see Adi in a ‘topor’ and ‘dhoti’.”

Rani Mukerji Marriage Reception In Mumbai

A month after their Italian Bengali-style wedding, the couple also hosted a wedding reception in Mumbai. This was also not a very grand affair, and a select few from Bollywood were invited. All we know for a fact is that Karan Johar and his mother, Anupam Kher, Nitesh Mukesh, and Siddharth Kak were invited, alongside some other close friends of the couple.

Happily Ever After!

Once the wedding was over, it was business as usual for this power couple. Rani plunged herself into shooting for “Mardani”, the next venture of YRF. They also announced their marriage to everyone. Rani issued an official statement, “I would like to share the happiest day of my life with all my fans all over the world whose love and blessings have been part of my journey all these years. I know that all my well-wishers who have waited for this day will be really happy for me.” When asked about what has changed for Rani, she says it is simply having to live away from her parents. She also finds it very difficult to make daily life decisions like what to cook and what vegetables to use. She cannot help but gush about her new husband, “He is absolutely the way I thought my man would be. Adi beats me to be a better human being than me, so I have got lucky. He is wonderful and not many people would believe that he makes me laugh, so he a good sense of humour and very cute.”

Once the news about the Adi – Rani Mukerji marriage spread, fans have been eagerly waiting to find a snap of the newlyweds and their wedding. But the couple continues to remain as elusive after marriage as they were while they were dating. Rani believes that Adi is the Shiva and sees herself as the Parvati who cannot really see anything beyond him. The couple not only share a very deep connection with each other, but also get along very well with their respective families as well. Adi is very much loved by both of Rani’s parents. As for Rani, she is definitely the apple of her mother-in –law’s eyes. Pamela Chopera, Aditya’s mother and the late Yash Chopra’s wife says happily about her son, “Adi is a different person these days. He is so happy, always smiling. When he was younger, he would sing walking up the stairs; he has started doing that again. He danced at his wedding! She has changed him for the better. And if he is happy, why should I not be happy?”
