The Gautami-Ram Kapoor Wedding: As Unlikely As It Is Lovely!

Best known for his roles as Jai Walia in Kasamh Se as well as Ram Kapoor in Bade Acche Lagte Hain, Ram Kapoor’s talents lie beyond being a badshah of soap operas, with silver screen appearances in Agent Vinod (2012), Student Of The Year (2013) and Humshakals (2014) as well hosting the show Rakhi Ka Swayamwar proving his versatility.

But it was his co-star on a different show altogether that managed to capture his heart, and we’re of course talking about Gautami Gadgil who starred alongside him in Ghar Ek Mandir. And just as on the show, their coming together and the subsequent Gautami Ram Kapoor wedding was plain out of the left field. Let us explain.

The Curious Case Of The Opposites

While we’re so accustomed to hearing how opposites attract, sometimes we encounter people who are quite a bit on the opposite side of the spectrum, so much so that we dismiss any chance of intimacy there. That’s not quite what happened with Gautami and Ram Kapoor, but that’s exactly what could have happened.

Given their off screen personalities, you wouldn’t even be wrong to assume something of that nature. The quintessential good girl Gautami is about as far removed from the “party boy” Ram. One likes to keep to herself and carries a sophisticated and reserved aura, while the other likes to party, is fond of food, drink and revelry, and generally is prone to being chatty and having a good time, all in all.

However, just as the two of them found themselves in an unlikely romance in the serial (Gautami was Ram’s sister-in-law who then – in a twist of fate – becomes his wife), the duo began to experience a closeness that was beyond a close professional relationship. Indeed, before long, in these two polar opposites, love was blossoming.

The Proposal

As if to prove the general theme of Ghar Ek Mandir, and reinforce the concept of how novel and organic life can be, Ram proposed to Gautami not in any conventional kind of way, instead popping the question to her at a party the both of them were at. Certainly not at a setting that conventional wisdom (and popular culture) would have us believe as ideal, right? Well, she readily accepted. And that, yes that, was the start of the Gautami Ram Kapoor wedding fairytale and a marriage that’ll make you believe. To those feeling a bit low, remember and believe in serendipity!

When Love Hits, It Really Registers

And just what do we mean by that? Well, the two of them decided to get married on none other than Valentine’s Day. Feb 14, 2003 was the date the two of them exchanged vows – or rather, got married according to Arya Samaj rituals – at Mayfair Rooms in Mumbai.

The couple that could possibly ‘not be’ instead turned out to be a mushy couple who specifically opted to go with having the added sentimentality of Feb 14 as their wedding date. Love can indeed strike at any time, and it sure is powerful isn’t it?

A Happy Family

The lovely couple went on to have two beautiful children, daughter Sia born 2006 and son Aks born 2009. Gautami took an extended sabbatical of 7 years to manage being a mum and run the house while Ram went up the ladder of success in show business.

When asked about his wife and family, Ram opines, “I think I have made the best decision in choosing my life partner. She knows that I have to work for long hours. I am blessed to have her in my life. At times I certainly miss being with them and wish that I could spend more time with my family.”

Gautami on the other hand describes her marriage to Ram as “Great fun… Happy, challenging, satisfying.” She goes on to add that they have been “together for almost 15 years now and I am so proud that he has worked hard and achieved all the success.”

Here’s to another 15 years of married bliss (and so much more) to the lovely couple!
