Rakesh Roshan Marriage: Together Forever Through Thick And Thin

Rakesh Roshan started out as an actor and while he met decent success, he was soon overshadowed by the larger than life superstars of his era. He eventually shifted his focus towards filmmaking, and made his directorial debut in 1987. While his film Karan Arjun in 1995 was a smash hit, most of his films preceding and succeeding Karan Arjun fared poorly at the box office.

He decided to make one last stand in the year 2000 with the film Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai that starred his son Hrithik Roshan. The movie was a blockbuster, and there was no turning back for Rakesh Roshan after that.

In his personal life, he had an arranged marriage with Pinky, the daughter of the reputed filmmaker J. Om Prakash. Unlike most celebrities, who marry at the peak of success, Rakesh was still in the formative years of his career and his wife stayed his true companion through the highs and lows of life. In this article, we take a closer look at the rock-solid Rakesh – Pinky Roshan marriage, their journey of love.

Rakesh Roshan – The Actor And Filmmaker

The son of famous music director Roshan, Rakesh was born 6th September 1949. Since his upbringing involved rubbing shoulders with some of the most popular actors of Hindi cinema, the young Rakesh was attracted to show business right from an early age. He was keen on working as an actor but started his career at the age of 16 as an assistant director after his father passed away. He eventually made his debut in the 1970’s family drama film Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani. Thereafter he appeared in several films across the 1970s predominantly as a supporting character.

Although acting was his primary profession, Rakesh always harboured a secret aspiration to be a filmmaker – just like the legendary Raj Kapoor. He started his own production company Filmkraft in 1980. He made his production debut with the film Aap Ke Deewane (1980), and his directorial debut with Khudgarz (1987). Rakesh made several films after that, which received a lukewarm response at the box office. While Karan Arjun (1995) was a commercial success, it was his son Hrithik Roshan’s debut film Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai that changed his fortunes. Thereafter, Rakesh Roshan made several commercially successful films – mostly with his son Hrithik – viz. Koi Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013).

Pinky Roshan – The Successful Arranged Marriage

Rakesh’s father was famous name in Bollywood, and thus had good relationships with most directors and actors. One such director was J. Om Prakash, who was well-known for commercially successful films in the 1960s. Om Prakash would frequently visit Roshan’s residence with his daughter Pinky, and this is how Rakesh and Pinky became good friends. Their acquaintanceship was limited to friendship though, and they would only meet whenever Pinky came with her father.

In 1967, Rakesh’s father passed away, and Rakesh soon started working as an assistant director. Later, when director Om Prakash was looking for a suitable match for Pinky, he thought of Rakesh. Thus, Rakesh and Pinky tied the knot some time around 1969-1970. The couple was blessed with their daughter Sunaina in 1972 and son Hrithik in 1974.

Their Absolute Faith And Respect For Marriage

Rakesh was a struggling actor with little more than a penny to his name, whereas Pinky came from an immensely affluent family. Despite the ostensible financial shock she received after the marriage, Pinky fulfilled her role of a life partner with utmost dedication and commitment. She was always supportive of her husband’s decision and was his anchor when the going got tough.

“I took her to a two-room apartment where I lived with my parents and brother. She understood my frustrations. She went through the tough period with patience and was never demanding.”
– Rakesh Roshan about his wife Pinky

During late 1980s and early 1990s Rakesh went through several phases of financial crunch owing to the failure of his films at the box office. It was during this phase that his marriage was tested to the core, but it finally came through with flying colours.

“We drove to the film’s premiere in my Mercedes. I told my wife Pinky ‘If the film flops this would be the last time we’d be sitting in the car… If this film (Khudgarz) fails, I won’t get another chance to prove myself’. My wife started crying….”
– Rakesh Roshan sharing an incident from the premiere of his film Khudgarz in 1987

The two clung on to one another like true soul-mates. Rakesh Roshan went on to become one of the most commercially successful directors of the new millennium (post-2000). Today, he enjoys fame and fortune, and be it good times or bad times, Pinky has always been by his side. Now that is commendable and there is a learning there. Here is wishing the Roshan family the best in their future pursuits.
