Unfortunately though, when Rajkumar applied, the acting course had shut down, and there were far too many applicants for the directorial course. So he opted for the editing course, and eventually graduated from the institute in 1987. It was seven years down the line that Rajkumar’s father asked him to get married but he firmly stated that he wouldn’t do so till his younger brother Sanjeev got engaged. From Nagpur To Pune And Then To Mumbai [Read More: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Marriage] Rajkumar Hirani was born on 20th November, 1962, in Nagpur in a Sindhi family that had migrated from Pakistan during the partition of India. Rajkumar was still in college when he got involved in theatre and gradually developed an interest in acting. His family was supportive though, and permitted him to join an acting school in Mumbai. Rajkumar later shared that he could not ‘blend-in’ and therefore returned back to his parents in Nagpur. His parents suggested him to join Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, which he did, and graduated in 1987 to become a freelance editor. He later made a foray into the world of advertising, making and editing advertisements. He even made a cameo in many popular advertisements of the 1990s. Rajkumar Hirani’s marriage happened sometime in between, and his first break came in the year 2000, when he joined the popular director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s team to become the lead film editor in his production team. While working with the production company, he wrote his first script in 2003, which was then made into the film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., which went on to become a cult classic. Although, since then, he had made only three films and each of them have been blockbusters at box office making him one of the most sought after film-makers in the tinsel town.Rajkumar Hirani’s Marriage, And The Pilot Wife By mid-1990s, Raju was making a decent living by making ad-films as well as editing promotional trailers of Bollywood films on a freelance basis. Although he was a far cry from what he is today, he was still very much settled, and that gave his parents enough reason to ask their 32-year old son to tie the knot. Rajkumar was nowhere close to having even the slightest interest in marriage. But since his parents were keen on him settling down soon, he gave in on the condition that his younger brother Sanjeev would also tie the knot soon. Rajkumar’s father agreed, and Sanjeev Hirani was soon engaged. It was Rajkumar’s turn now, and his parents chose a Sikh girl for him. She was Manjeet Lamba, who worked as an ace pilot in Air India. She seemed to be the right person for him according to his parents and Rajkumar Hirani’s marriage with Manjeet eventually happened in December 1994, along with Rajkumar’s younger brother Sanjeev, who tied the knot with his to-be wife Neetu. In an interview, Manjeet Hirani joked that she is the odd one out in the family since she is a pilot.
