It was the year 1980, and Rajinikanth was busy working in his mentor K. Balachander’s Tamil film Thillu Mullu, which was the remake of the 1979 Bollywood comedy film Golmaal. The movie was Rajinikanth’s first full length comedy film. It was during the filming of the movie that he received a request for an interview for a college magazine. Rajinikanth obliged and within moments he was face-to-face to one of the prettiest faces he had ever seen. It was a lady named Latha Rangachari. Little did the then 30-something Rajinikanth know that by the end of the interview he would be proposing to the 23-something Latha Rangachari, who was a student at the Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai or in a few years the Latha Rangachari Rajinikanth Marriage would be a hit success. Latha and Rajinikanth shared a common Bangalore connect since Rajinikanth was earlier employed in Bangalore Transport Service as a bus conductor and Latha’s family owned a house there. This provided a common platform for the two to kick-off the interview, and soon Latha realised how comfortable she was talking to him despite his superstar status.

Rajinikanth Marriage - The Kamal Haasan Factor

As the interview progressed, Rajinikanth realised that there was something about this lady that made him feel attracted towards her. He had never felt anything like this before. In a moment or two, it dawned on him that he had finally found a soulmate in the form of Latha Rangachari. The thought lingered at the back of his mind all throughout the interview, and when the interview reached its fag end he felt that he should not let this opportunity pass by. He casually put forward his proposal, and asked Latha if she would marry him. Obviously the question of a Rajinikanth marriage, much less to herself must have surprised her. But to his amazement, Latha smiled and replied shyly that he will have to speak to her parents first. That moment sealed the bond of this to-be life partners. The two knew that they were meant for each, and although Rajinikanth did not immediately visit Latha’s parents, he requested her to stay in touch to which she readily agreed.

The interview changed the perception of the superstar which Latha Rangachari had harboured in her mind. She realised that in spite of being at the heights of success of popularity, Rajinikanth maintained an undeniably modest real life character. Her attraction towards Rajinikanth fuelled her curiosity about his past, and as she learnt more of his humble origins, she grew fonder of this Tamil cinema icon.

Rajinikanth from his end had shared the news of his new-found love with his close friends and colleagues from the Tamil film industry. To his delight, he discovered that his close friend and co-actor, the popular Tamil cinema comedian Y.G. Mahendran, happened to be the husband of Latha’s sister, Sudha. He sought the help of certain seniors from the Tamil industry who helped Rajinikanth out by visiting Latha’s parents and seeking their permission for the Latha Rajinikanth Marriage. All throughout the process, Rajinikanth stayed nervous since he was not sure if Latha’s parents would agree. But they were meant for each other, and it came as a sense of immense relief and joy when he learnt that Latha’s parents had given their permission for the wedding.
