Madhavan has enjoyed popularity in Hindi films as well Tamil cinema. In the Tamil film industry, he was often touted to be the 21st century chocolate boy after the fleeting success of romantic drama Alaipayuthey (2000) made by Mani Ratnam. The film established him as the quintessential romantic hero, but Madhavan is also known for his fine acting prowess – which he has displayed with critically-acclaimed films like 3 Idiots (2009) and Tanu Weds Manu (2011). While he is considered one of the most handsome actors in the country, it is an interesting fact that he once thought he could never get married owing to his dark complexion. Madhavan married his long-time love interest, Sarita Birje, in 1999 – after 8 years of dating. Their marriage has been a success, and in June 2016, the couple celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. We take a closer look at the amazing R. Madhavan – Sarita love story.R. Madhavan – The Making Of The Actor Madhavan was born on 1st June 1970 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand (then in Bihar), into a Tamil household. He received his early education from Jamshedpur, but his family soon moved to Kolhapur in Maharashtra. It was here that he received his further education, finally graduating in electronics. He later joined the National Cadet Corps, which provided him with an opportunity to travel to England.Madhavan considered joining the Armed Forces but was deemed ineligible since he did not meet the age criteria – missing out by a mere six months. Disheartened, he took to an alternative career and started teaching courses in public speaking. He realised that he has a natural talent for it, and therefore decided to do a course in public speaking for which he moved to Mumbai. It was here that he made his modelling portfolio, which eventually led him to his debut role in Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996).Eventually he appeared in numerous Hindi TV serials and was noticed by Mani Ratnam, who gave him his breakthrough role in Alaipayuthey (2000). There was no turning back for Madhavan, and since his first commercial success in 2000, he has acted in over 40 films in seven different languages – giving him a truly pan-Indian appeal.Sarita Birje – The Girl Who Asked Him Out For A DateSponsored Search R. Madhavan excelled at his public speaking courses, eventually drawing students from all corners of the city. It was one day at a public speaking workshop that he met Sarita Birje – a young woman who aspired to become an air hostess. Madhavan’s workshops were recommended to Sarita by her relatives, and since she was planning to appear for an air hostess interview, she decided to attend the session. Needless to say the class was useful, but what she didn’t know is that it would be life changing! Sarita did go on to become an air hostess after cracking the interview, but the course was still on, and on the last class she shared the pleasant news with Madhavan, and promptly asked him out for a ‘thank you’ dinner. Madhavan could not believe it. He never thought he could become romantically involved with a girl since he believed his complexion was of the darker shade.“…She asked me out on a date one day. I was a dark man and thought it was an opportunity. Didn’t know if I would ever get married so I grabbed on to the opportunity and married her.” – R. The couple celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary in June 2016, while it was their 25th year of togetherness.Madhavan once shared in an interview that he never lets jealousy and suspicion creep into his life, and he does that by keeping Sarita in the loop with every aspect of his life.
