Prakash Raj Marriage: “My Ex Wife Loves My Children Too”

Prakash Raj is one of the most sought after personalities in all of Indian cinema. The actor, director, and producer is best known for his work in South Indian cinema, but his fluency in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi as well as Hindi and English has made him a household name across the length and breadth of the country.

The recipient of three National Film Awards as an actor for Iruvar, Anthapuram and Kanchivaram, he also has to his credit, as a producer, a National Film Award for Best Feature Film for Puttakkana Highway. Despite his fame, the actor has maintained a dignified public presence, and while fans are aware of tale of the heartbreaking Lalitha Kumari Prakash Raj marriage story, he’s never let things get out of hand, preferring to be honest, minus the drama.

Prakash And Lalitha Kumari: A 15 Year Long Association

The tale of the first Prakash Raj marriage is a bitter sweet narrative. Prakash wed Tamil film actress Lalitha Kumari in 1994. The two of them enjoyed a smooth marital life for some years before they seemed to drift apart with time, especially from Prakash Raj’s side. The death of their son Sidhu in 2004 affected the family a lot and Prakash seemed to take it pretty hard. Sidhu was just four years old when he fell off of a table while trying to fly a kite and died a few months later due to the complications with the injuries. It is something he says he has moved on from now, but perhaps the burden of sharing such a personal and saddening memory was too much for him as the couple filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Well, it wasn’t really a mutual decision to file for divorce as Lalitha wanted Prakash to stay, but she accepted Prakash’s sincerity and integrity and did what she thought would be best for him. And so the Lalitha Kumari Prakash Raj marriage saw it’s solemn but composed conclusion.

The age difference between the couple is 12 years, but the actor says that it is reinvigorating to have a “young and beautiful” woman by his side, and that some of her energy transfers to him enabling him a new lease on life of sorts. There was talk of a serious love blooming between the two, and duly, a second Prakash Raj marriage to Pony Verma was forecast; a prediction that followed through.

The couple married on 24 August, 2010 on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, in an intimate Punjabi ceremony, nine months after Prakash and Lalitha’s divorce proceedings were wrapped up in court. Prakash’s mom – whom the actor is extremely close to – along with his sisters, daughters, close friends and associates were all present to pass on their blessings to the couple.

The couple then hosted their first reception at the luxurious Sahara hotel in Mumbai, as well as at a number of locations across the country for all of their friends from the various film industries.
