Navjot Singh Sidhu is best known for his fine cricketing skills but in more recent times is better recalled for for his thunderous guffaw and punchy one-liners colloquially referred to as ‘Sidhuisms.’ Sidhu started his career as a cricketer way back in 1983, but then wore numerous hats after his retirement from cricket in the year 1999. In 2004, he joined politics, winning a seat in state elections from Amritsar constituency only to resign later due to a legal case against him. He later re-won in 2009. Navjot Singh Sidhu was born on 20th October, 1963, in a Sikh family in the city of Patiala, Punjab. Sidhu’s father was an avid cricket player, and wanted to see his son take to the sport and play it at a national level. Sidhu started his cricket coaching when he was still young, and made his début in international test cricket at the age of 20 in the year 1983. His first major breakthrough came in the 1987 cricket world cup where he scored 73 runs in his début one day international cricket match. He was later given the title ‘Strokeless Wonder’ for his effortless batting style and calm persona on the field.

Navjot Singh Sidhu retired from all forms of cricket in the year 1998. Since then, he has juggled many hats including a stint as a cricket commentator, then as a cricket analyst, reality TV judge, and a cameo actor. Sidhu made a foray into politics in the year 2004, but later had to step down from the seat due to a pending court case. Sidhu had won the elections from Amritsar in Punjab, which is the same constituency from where his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, won the elections in 2012. Navjot Singh Sidhu tied the knot with Dr. Navjot Kaur, (yes, a doctor) somewhere in the mid-1980s. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who is six months older to Sidhu, was doing her MBBS course when they first met. In an interview, Sidhu shared that he fell in love with Navjot Kaur the very first time he saw her and decided to pursue her. He would deliberately wait for her at a restaurant opposite to Navjot Kaur’s house.

Navjot managed to strike a friendship with Navjot Kaur but it took him months to convince her to marry him. Eventually, his namesake lady-love agreed to tie the knot, and the two are said to have tied the knot somewhere during Sidhu’s hiatus from cricket between 1983 to 1987. It was a traditional Sikh wedding, and was most probably held at Patiala, which is the Sidhu family’s native place. The couple have been blessed with two children, a son named Karan, and a daughter named Rabia.
