Who Is Mama June?

Mama June Shannon’s actual name is June Shannon. She was born on August 10, 1979, and was raised in Georgia. She is a mother of 4 children, and her daughter, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson was a contestant in the child beauty pageant show, Toddlers & Tiaras. Soon, June Shannon’s family got their own show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The next big step toward stardom was June’s own weight loss journey show, Mama June: From Not To Hot on WeTV.

Mama June weighed 460 lbs, and her BMI was clearly in the obese range. That’s why she decided to go for gastric sleeve surgery. In this type of weight loss surgery, a major part of the stomach is removed. As a result, the patients will not be able to eat as much food as they did before the surgery. Mama June underwent surgery on her show From Not To Hot.

After the surgery, she had to under other surgeries in her arms, tummy, and neck to get rid of the extra folds of skin, which are generally the aftermath of weight loss surgeries. She admitted that her daughters were making fun of her “turkey neck,” and that’s why she went for fat-freezing treatment in her neck area. But all that surgery can only work to an extent. To keep the weight off, she takes care of what she eats and works out. So, let’s take a look at her diet and lifestyle.

Since her gastric sleeve surgery, Mama June has started to take care of her health. After all, who wants to spend over $75,000 for weight loss surgery again and again? She has revealed her secret to keeping the weight off. And here’s how she maintains her weight:

  • Walking

In an interview with Daily Mail, she said, “Once you get started with the kids you don’t think about it, you’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve already walked three miles!” She also said that she keeps herself busy, which prevents her from wanting to eat every time. She told In Touch Weekly, “Honestly, when I first started losing weight, it was just being more active, being busy with the show and doing more things with Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

  • Healthy Diet

She also takes the help of her personal trainer, Natasha Fett, who is also her diet coach. Natasha started incorporating healthy eating into June’s lifestyle slowly. She did not take away Mama June’s all favorite foods completely. Fett recommended June to eat carbs early in the day and reduce her fat intake later in the day. She also allowed Mama June to consume healthy fats like avocado and almond butter, hummus, celery, and slow-digesting foods like brown rice, lentils, sweet potatoes, and beans.

  • Tea And Coffee

Tea and coffee may sound terrible to people who do not like these caffeinated beverages. But the reason Fett allowed tea and coffee is that Mama June, like many of us, had a wrong notion that drinking protein shakes would help her lose the weight. In fact, protein shakes are loaded with added sugar, which is not apt for those who are trying to lose weight and not very active. Tea and coffee help suppress appetite, have 0-3 calories (without sugar and cream), and are great energy boosters.

  • Keto Diet

Recently, Mama June revealed that the Ketogenic diet or Keto diet is helping her stay slim. She follows a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb diet – which means a lot of cheese, chicken, eggs, and avocado, low or no bread, pasta, and certain veggies.

  • Large Breakfast

Having a good and heavy breakfast is essential for keeping the weight off and preventing overeating junk food throughout the day. Not skipping breakfast is another way to maintain the lost weight.

  • Exercise

Mama June started with a low-impact exercise like walking. Now, that she has lost a lot of weight and somewhat recovered from the surgery, she is ready to take on some high-intensity cardio to took slender and toned.

  • Weight Loss Supplements

Mama June also takes a couple of weight loss supplements – apple cider vinegar and garcinia cambogia for weight loss. These work by suppressing the appetite, increasing thermogenesis, and preventing new fat cell synthesis. Talk to your doctor before taking these supplements for weight loss.

Recent news revealed that Mama June lost eyesight in her right eye and had to undergo eye surgery. In the process of undergoing four surgeries for her eyes, she regained 25 lbs. In an interview, she said, “I can’t do anything and have to lay down most of the time and take care of my vision.” She also added, “I can lose the weight, I know that. And I know I don’t want to go back over 200 pounds. I’m paying attention to it (vision) more.”
