Madhuri Dixit Wedding: The Real Insider Story

Madhuri Dixit Wedding 1

The Prologue To The Madhuri Dixit Wedding

This is the inside story of Madhuri Dixit wedding with Mr. Sriram Nene. Madhuri has always been a private person, one who steadfastly protected her privacy and personal life. In the year 1999, more than a decade after she became the ruling queen of Bollywood, she stepped down her throne and walked down the aisle to marry an Indian American who was chosen by her parents. Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene was a cardiovascular surgeon based out of Los Angeles, California. Madhuri Dixit let her parents decide on who she had to marry, the elders in the family went through the horoscopes and everything before giving the Madhav Nene – Madhuri Dixit Wedding a final go-ahead. Far from media glare, Dr. Nene was a successful professional who led his life on his own terms. He bonded well with Madhuri and they finally got married on the 17th of October 1999. In fact, at the time of the engagement, Dr. Nene didn’t know how popular an actress Madhuri was. As Madhuri’s sister later explained, “Sriram brought home a couple of Madhuri’s films and actually watched them after he got engaged”. So he was completely unaware of his would-be wife’s star status and the fan following she enjoyed at the time of their marriage.

Maduridixit weeding 2

The date and the madhuri dixit wedding itself was a secret affair, as the Dixits and the Nenes wanted to have a small and personal wedding ceremony. Madhuri Dixit and Sriram Madhav Nene tied the knot at an undisclosed location in the United States and a day later, her long time manager and confidante Rikku Rakeshnath made the public announcement. The couple had a romantic honeymoon in the American islands of Hawaii after which, the couple came to India where the Dixit family hosted one of the grandest wedding receptions at that time. It was decided by Madhuri herself, that she would complete all her ongoing assignments and then move to the US.

It was a surprise to everyone in the film fraternity and her fans too, because at the time of the Sriram – Madhuri Dixit marriage, Madhuri was at the peak of her career, delivering one blockbuster after another. The couple held a grand reception and every actor worth his or her salt was in attendance, and there weren’t just actors, but also celebrities, sportspersons, business tycoons, politicians and page3 individuals who were there to wish Madhuri and Sriram a beautifully wedded life. Some of the prominent names in attendance were the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh, actors Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Namratha Shiridkar, Saira Banu and artists like M.F. Hussain, who was so enamoured by Madhuri’s beauty ( he had publicly stated that he had watched Hum Aap Ke Hain Kaun 67 times only for her) that he made her his muse and painted a series on her and directed a movie called Gaja Gamini based on those paintings of Madhuri Dixit as a tribute to her.

Life Beyond The Big Screen

The Wedding 2

Madhuri was right in her choice, and Dr. Nene was the perfect gentleman husband. He took her away from the entire hullabaloo, all the noise and the paparazzi. Madhuri Dixit and Dr. Sriram Nene made Los Angeles their home. Though it is the Mecca of world cinema, Madhuri wasn’t exactly a known face in the English cinema going crowd. She enjoyed her days as a commoner – shopping at the street end convenience store, going for long beautiful walks like all newlyweds and enjoying her time away from the public eye. Doing things that we all take for granted, or probably doing things that nobody will ever notice us doing.

The Sunny Side Of Madhuri Dixit Wedding

Dr. Nene as he says in one interview, “did not realise his wife’s popularity until some Non Resident Indian’s came knocking, and then it was like a flood of visitors”. There were visitors from Bollywood who kept dropping by, like her friends Sharukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Aditya Chopra and others whenever they were in town, on a holiday or for an outdoor shoot in the United States. But more or less, Madhuri disappeared from the spot light for a while. She had a beautiful house, a wonderful husband and it is inspiring how she just stayed from everything – for so long. The couple relocated from Los Angeles, California to Denver in Colarado state soon after madhuri dixit wedding. The gorgeous couple were blessed with their first son, Arin Nene in the year 2003 and had their second child, another boy – named Rayaan Nene two years later, in March 2005.

Life was good, the kids were young, actually old enough to be on their own – they were mamma’s boys anyways but they were okay if mom wasn’t around. It was during this time that Aditya Chopra, producer and the scion of the Yash Raj empire called on Madhuri and asked if she’d do a film for his banner.

The Comeback ( After Madhuri Dixit Wedding & Life In America)

madhuri is back

Sriram and Madhuri sat together, and heard the story of Aaja Nachle, the movie that Aditya Chopra wanted to produce with Madhuri in the lead. It was a woman centric film, with dance as the soul of the film. This is why Aditya insisted on Madhuri being a part of the film, she is the best dancer-actress of our time. She eventually agreed to do the film and was shuttling between United States and India during the shoot. The film was her first, after a six year sabbatical. It had an ensemble cast of Konkona Sen Sharma, Jugal Hansraj, Akshaye Khanna and Kunal Kapoor . Aaja Nachle was directed by Anil Mehta and was released in the US and in India simultaneously in November, 2007. The film didn’t work out as planned, but people thronged to see their dream girl on the big screen after six years. It proved two things, one- Madhuri was a born performer who could still deliver a stellar performance and two- she was not just remembered, but still loved. People wanted to watch her on the big screen. The movie brought her back into the limelight and offers just kept pouring. She and Sriram decided it was best for them to move to India, as the kids needed their mother and Sriram could always find work, he was after all, a very reputed doctor in the USA too.

In October 2011, almost a decade after moving out of India, Madhuri along with her husband Sriram Nene and sons Arin and Rayaan relocated to Mumbai. Madhuri thought films would take too much of her time, and as her kids are still very young, decided to work on the telly which was a little bit more flexible than working full time on a film, where you needed to spend a lot of time away from home. She was the dance judge on the Star One show, Nach Baliye. She was also the talent judge on the super hit reality dance show Jhalak Dhikhla Jaa for four seasons in a row. She has acted in movies like Dedh Ishqia and Gulaab Gang (where she teamed up with one-time rival Juhi Chawla in a rustic role) and even did a cameo in the Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. She has also appeared on the Superwoman’s Youtube video, “What Bollywood Has Taught Me”. In the year 2013, Madhuri had started an online dance academy called “Dance With Madhuri” which is accessible in more than 200 countries, with a regular viewership of over two lacs. In 2014, she was appointed as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for India.
