Lucky Ali Marriages: “I Am Not Suited To One Marriage”

Lucky Ali has given us some of the most hum-worthy songs in this 21st century. While Ali had been into singing since the late 1970s, it was his transcendent vocals in the songs from Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000), that made everyone immediately stand up and take notice of this exceptionally talented musician. In spite of being the son of yesteryear comedian Mehmood, Lucky Ali wore many hats, and is the one of the few in the industry who is a singer, songwriter, actor, and has worked both on the big screen as well on television. Lucky Ali’s marriages have become popular stories due to his open and honest confessions.

On the personal front, Ali has always been candid about the fact that he can never be a one-woman man, and has in fact been married thrice. Ali’s love story and hat trick of marriages deserves a closer look:

Lucky Ali – The Singer And Songwriter

Lucky Ali's Marriages

Lucky Ali was born Maqsood Mehmood Ali on 19th September 1958 as the second child amongst the eight fathered by the famous comedian, Mehmood Ali. “Lucky,” as his pet name was, received most of his primary education in Mumbai and higher education in Mussorie and Bangalore.

Ali sang his first song in his father’s film in the year 1978 before which he appeared in some films as a child actor. He appeared in small roles all throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and would sing songs that mostly slipped into oblivion. It was his vocals for Hrithik Roshan’s debut film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in 2000 that captured the attention of audience as well as music labels. Since then Lucky Ali has released six studio albums, and has sang songs in a whopping six different languages.

Lucky Ali’s Marriages : The First Love

Lucky Ali's Marriages - The-First-Love-And-The-First-Marriage

Lucky Ali’s first love and marriage was with the New Zealander model Meaghan Jane McCleary, who appeared in the video of Ali’s hit song O Sanam (1996). Ali shared in an interview that he first met Meaghan in New Delhi, when she was visiting New Delhi, where Ali was also present with his younger brother who happened to have some acquaintanceship with Meaghan. Ali and Meaghan were introduced to one another, and the two soon started meeting each other regularly. She later left for New Zealand, but her absence was too much for Ali to handle since he had developed an infatuation towards her. He decided that it is time he should spill his feelings, and when Meaghan visited India the next time, Ali was all set with his proposal. Thankfully, Meaghan shared the same sentiment, and it did not take much time for her to say ‘Yes’. Ali later shared the following words about his proposal to Meaghan in an interview in 2010.

“She came to India on a Wednesday, I proposed on a Thursday and we married on a Friday.”
– Lucky Ali on his wedding with first wife Meaghan Jane McCleary

Lucky Ali and Meaghan Jane McCleary got married in the year 1996, and the couple went on to have two children a son Ta’awwuz (b. 1996) and a daughter Tasmia (b. 1997). It is said that Meaghan later converted to Ali’s faith, and the couple later shifted to Ali’s father, Mehmood’s farmhouse in Bangalore. But like Ali had always been candid about, he was definitely not a man who would just settle down with one marriage.

“I always knew I’d have more than one wife. In fact I did tell Meaghan about it when we got married. She thought I was joking.”

Lucky Ali’s Marriages : ‘Second Love, Here I Come’

Lucky Ali's Marriages - Second Wife

Ali was not remotely joking when he said to media and his wife Meaghan that there are high chances he might consider a second marriage. In the year 2000, four years after his first marriage, Ali happened to meet a Parsi lady named Anahita, who worked as a filmmaker and photographer in Mumbai. Not much is known about their courtship but it is mostly speculated to be exactly like the one with Meaghan – short and with an aim to get hitched soon.

Ali shared in an interview that his wife Meaghan had been away in New Zealand for quite some time, and he started feeling lonely, eventually yearning to have a partner. It is during that phase he happened to meet Anahita, and proposed marriage. But Ali did not shy away from informing his first wife, and since bigamy is permitted in his faith, he sought the permission of his first wife to tie the knot with Anahita. Thus both Lucky Ali’s marriages would be allowed and legal. Apparently, even Anahita spoke with Meaghan who eventually granted the permission. Anahita and Ali got married in the year 2000, and just like Meaghan, Anahita changed her religion, and her name to Inaya. The couple had two children a son, Raiyan and a daughter Sara.

Lucky candidly admitted to be married to the two women simultaneously, and even shared that his two wives share a cordial relationship. He said that his entire family (his two wives and children) always celebrate festivals together. He even added that he is very adept at maintaining two women and two worlds simultaneously, and that his source of strength is his two wives. But like Ali had always shared in his own words, he was not someone to settle down with a plain old single (or dual!) marriage.

“He said to her, be careful. He might just take a third wife.”
– Lucky Ali about his father warning his second wife

Guess Inaya should have heeded her father-in-law warning, since Ali was all set to do the triple tango in his matrimonial life.

Lucky Ali’s Marriages : Going For The Third Wedlock

Lucky Ali's Marriages - Third Wife

Almost a decade after his second marriage, Ali seemed to have grown bored of his two wedlocks, and was hot on the heels of a third one. The opportunity came knocking itself in the year 2009, when Ali happened to meet the British model and former Miss England title holder Kate Elizabeth Hallam on the sets of a film being shot in Bangalore. Kate shared later that she fell in love with Ali right at the first sight, and she had no idea who he was, and what he did. Her infatuation towards him did not go unnoticed, and within five weeks of their friendship Ali proposed marriage to Kate, who agreed with alacrity. Apparently, Lucky Ali’s Marriages to his previous wives had already ended and therefore the road was the clear for him to marry Kate.

Kate and Ali got married in a private court marriage in Bangalore in 2010. After the wedding, Kate changed her religion, and her name to Aiesha Ali. She later shared that she did not do it on force, and it was completely her wish to convert and rename. Kate and Ali were blessed with a son in late 2011, and they named him Dani (this was Ali’s fifth child).

“I get to learn something new each day in India even after two years. Also, I’m enjoying the Indian spicy food and love wearing Indian clothes.”
– Aeisha Ali (Lucky Ali’s third wife)

So A Fourth One…?

Lucky Ali's Marriages - Family

Thankfully, out of all Lucky Ali’s marriages this has been more Ali has been in a stable marriage since his wedding to Kate (Aeisha Ali). Kate shared that Lucky Ali is a very doting father, and makes it a point to spend ample time with the family. Little is known about his first two wives but it is said that their children continue to stay with Ali in his farmhouse in Bangalore. Despite all the love between Kate and Ali, only time will tell whether Ali will settle for three or would aim higher. But let us not make our own conclusions, and rather listen to Lucky Ali’s very own words about marriage and himself.

“Some are suited for one marriage. I don’t think I am suited for one marriage. I move around a lot. I am a free spirit. I get lonely. I cannot cheat. What happens when you are faced with temptations? It’s better to marry. Be honest to your wife and love your wives.”
