1935 was a time when countries were being torn apart by the effects of World War II, and people were suffering. Dedicating a day to the importance of friendship helped bring back some semblance of normality and strength to the people who had lost family and friends to the war.

As a result, the US Congress declared that the first Sunday in the month of August would be celebrated as Friendship Day. There was an official declaration in 1935, and the first Sunday in August became a day for friends and friendship.

Initially, the first Sunday of the month of August was an annual event and National Friendship Day. With time, it was not limited to the United States of America, as more countries got involved. Today, people celebrate the day with much joy and fanfare all over the world. In 1997, the United Nations named popular cartoon character Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship.
