Bjergsen Crowned NA’s Top LCS Legend

The League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) marked a significant milestone by unveiling its official ranking of the top 10 players in North American league history. Leading this prestigious list is Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg, a mid laner whose career achievements have solidified his status as the region’s most dominant competitor. This recognition highlights not just individual brilliance but the evolution of professional League of Legends in NA over a decade.

The Rise of a Mid Lane Icon

Bjergsen’s journey in the LCS began with Team SoloMid (TSM) ahead of the 2014 Spring Split, where he quickly established himself as a force. In his debut season, he secured the MVP award, leading TSM to a 22-6 regular season record and a championship victory. This early success set the tone for a career defined by consistency and excellence, with Bjergsen earning four regular season MVPs—double that of the next closest player—and multiple playoff MVPs.

His impact extended beyond statistics. Bjergsen redefined the mid lane role in NA, introducing a mechanical precision and strategic depth that influenced generations of players. Opponents often banned his preferred champions, such as Syndra, which he played in over 65 professional matches, more than double his third-most played pick. This target-banning phenomenon underscored his threat level, yet he consistently delivered in high-stakes moments.

Dominance in Domestic Play

Bjergsen’s trophy cabinet boasts six LCS titles and ten finals appearances, a record unmatched in NA. He never finished below fifth place in any split, making playoffs every season and culminating in a fifth championship in Summer 2020 despite heavy bans. His leadership propelled TSM to dominance, upsetting stronger teams through sheer consistency.

Even after transitioning to Team Liquid, Bjergsen maintained his elite performance. The LCS’s celebratory list placed him at #1, ahead of contemporaries like Impact, Xmithie, and Jensen, recognizing his role in elevating NA’s competitive standard. Six active players made the top 10, blending past legends with current stars.

Signature Champions and Playstyle

Bjergsen’s champion pool was a masterclass in versatility and mastery. Syndra topped his list with extensive playtime, allowing him to control lanes and burst down foes. Other staples included mages and assassins that suited his aggressive, calculated style—prioritizing wave management, roams, and teamfight positioning.

• Syndra: 65+ games, signature for mid-lane dominance.
• Orianna/Zed: High-winrate picks in playoffs.
• Adaptability: Switched seamlessly despite bans up to 22/25 games in series.

This adaptability shone in playoffs, where he earned MVP in all five of TSM’s 2020 victories, including a finals performance against FlyQuest.

International Challenges and Legacy

While Bjergsen’s NA record is unparalleled, international Worlds remained elusive. He qualified five times, winning IEM Katowice 2015, but advanced past groups only once. These showings highlighted NA’s regional struggles, yet Bjergsen’s individual prowess kept hope alive, often carrying teams against global giants.

Retiring briefly before returning with 100 Thieves and later Team Liquid, Bjergsen’s career spanned eras. The LCS list cements his legacy: all-time kills leader, perennial All-Pro (six first-team selections), and never below fourth in voting.

Impact on NA Esports Culture

Bjergsen wasn’t just a player; he was a cultural phenomenon. As TSM’s star, he drew massive audiences, embodying the “hype style” of NA esports. Commentators like Jatt praised him for defining mid-lane play for nearly a decade, influencing coaching, scouting, and fan expectations.

His move to North America from Europe brought a professional ethos, raising the bar for imports and locals alike. Today, with the LCS evolving into new formats, Bjergsen’s era represents a golden age of sustained excellence.

Comparing the Top Contenders

The top 10 list sparks debate. Impact’s top-lane stability, Xmithie’s jungle vision, and Jensen’s rival mid-lane flair earned their spots. Yet Bjergsen’s stats—most playoffs, MVPs, finals—set him apart. Six active players signal a bright future, but none match his longevity.

• Active players: Bjergsen, Jensen, others driving current meta.
• Retired: Pioneers who built the foundation.
