The Troubled First Marriage

Anupam Kher's Marriage - Anupam And Kirron With Gautam Berry And Sikandar Kher; Inset Gautam Berry

While many consider Anupam Kher’s marriage to Kirron Kher his first wedlock, it was in fact his second tryst with matrimony. Anupam Kher was first married somewhere around circa 1979 in a traditional Hindu marriage arranged by his parents. The young Anupam who was then still trying to find a foothold in Indian cinema was not happy with the marriage and thus found a confidante in his friend and fellow theatre artist Kirron. They both were good friends and little did they know back then that their friendship would blossom into romance and then lead to marriage.

The Match That Wasn’t ‘Berry’ Fruitful

Anupam Kher’s marriage to Kirron Kher was not Kirron’s first tryst with love and marriage either. Anupam and Kirron, then Kiran Thakar Singh, met in 1980 and they would often tour together, staging their plays at different locations. Their camaraderie extended beyond the stage though, and they were such good friends that they would never hide anything from each other. In 1981, when the duo were still struggling to find fruitful work, Kirron visited Mumbai in order to persuade Bollywood producers to cast her. While in her quest to search for work, she happened to bump into Gautam Berry, a Mumbai-based businessman. Not much is known as to what conspired between the two but within weeks of meeting each other, the two decided to tie the knot. Kirron and Gautam got married in early 1980, and the same year they had their son whom they named Sikander. Things were going smooth in Kirron and Gautam’s marriage till it hot a roadblock somewhere around 1984. Things were reported to have gone so bad that Kirron was seriously contemplating getting a divorce. Little did Kirron know that her best friend Anupam Kher’s marriage was also in trouble.

Anupam Kher's Marriage - Kirron And Anupam At The Screen Actors Guild Awards

It was 1985, and Kirron and Anupam were in Kolkata (then Calcutta) for actor Raj Babbar’s wife Nadira Babbar’s play. The best pals were meeting after a significant long gap, and this time when Kirron saw Anupam, she felt something different about him. The next moments laid the foundation for their relationship and Kirron and Anumpam Kher’s marriage. There was a touch of tenderness in the way Anupam looked in her eyes this time, and she felt that there was something on his mind. But since their performance was the main thing on the agenda, they pushed aside their thoughts and focussed on the play. The play went well and the two returned back to their respective backstage makeup rooms. Kirron was packing up her things when she heard a knock at the door. It was Anupam Kher; he seemed thoughtful and still had that distinct look in his eyes. Kirron sensed it and was about to ask him about that but before she could say anything, Anupam said in terse yet infatuated manner “I want to talk to you. I think I have fallen in love with you.” That was it! So many years of friendship finally culminated in a fond moment. It was the most emotion-packed love confession Kirron had heard, and that moment changed every equation the duo ever shared. Here is what Kirron shared about that moment:

“Suddenly there was this immense, intense change, the chemistry exploded. I got a divorce and married him. He had nothing then.”
– Kirron Kher about the moment Anupam Kher proposed her

Anupam Kher’s Marriage To Kirron, Together As Wife And Husband

Anupam Kher and Kirron Kher tied the knot in 1985. Both of them had gotten divorced from their respective partners by then. It was a private ceremony in Gurgaon, and they called every friend from their theatre community. Here is a grainy video of their wedding:

After getting married, the newly-weds moved together to Mumbai along with Sikander, Kirron’s son from first marriage. Kirron retained the custody of her son after her divorce from Gautam Berry, and therefore bestowed her second husband’s surname to Sikander. Kirron and Anupam Kher have had a successful run with their marriage but of course it saw its own share of ups and downs. For example, Anupam turned producer at the turn of the century, and due to some overambitious planning, he had to borrow heavily from others. Since Kirron was against such bold steps, he would not share much about his production dreams with her his wife. Needless to say, their relationship took a hit. Eventually, Anupam Kher’s marriage faced a financial crunch, and the couple had to go through some testing times. Kirron was forced to break her hiatus from cinema and work again to recover those losses. Thanks to their resilience and positive mind-set, the couple soon overcame the odds.

Opposites Attract

Kirron has always been candid about the fact her and Anupam Kher’s marriage has been that of opposites. While Kirron loves dressing with elegance, Anupam is not someone who pays much attention to sartorial details. Even their busy schedules keep them away from one another. She shared in an interview that Anupam Kher leaves early in the morning for work and comes back only in the evening. Even Kirron stays busy since she has won a parliamentary seat, and the couple once acknowledged in an interview that they spend only sparing moments together. Kirron stays occupied with her work in Chandigarh and New Delhi while Anupam resides in Mumbai busy with his own work.

Despite all these odds, the couple cut a very cute picture and the love that they share is very much evident. This is why Kirron and Anupam Kher’s marriage has lasted as long as it has. Even after being married for 30+ years, they make it a point to maintain that friendship and bonhomie in their relationship. No marriage is perfect, and just like any other relationship, it has its ups and downs, the outcome to which is determined by the faith and confidence you hold in your marriage. Like Kirron once said, “In marriage, one learns to find solutions.” It is indeed true that those who find solutions taste true success with their matrimony, not just for now, but tomorrow, the day after, and forever.
