The story of the Twinkle – Akshay Kumar marriage is a very interesting one, but before we get to that, let’s recap. Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, wait, well, our very own Akshay Kumar was born in Delhi, India on the 9th of September. His father, Hari Om Bhatia, was a military officer and Akshay spent his childhood moving from city to city, finally settling in Mumbai. He studied at Don Bosco School in Mumbai and later enrolled in Guru Nanak Khalsa for his higher education but, dropped out mid way.

He was known to be a performer right from his childhood and deeply interested in the art of learning – martial arts. His father promised to concede to his demand of studying the art of fighting, if he secured first class in his board exam. As fate would have it, he managed to accomplish the feat and after obtaining a black belt in Taekwondo, he flew to Bangkok to study Martial Arts. There he stayed with his uncle who got him a job at the Metro Guest house where he worked as a chef. This was much before he became an actor who knew that Akshay Kumar marriage would be with one of the most sought after actresses of Bollywood.

He later worked in Kolkata for a travel agency for a year and a half. His friends encouraged him to take up modelling and that was when he decided to take the plunge. After his successful start as a model, he decided to change his name to Akshay from Rajiv Om Bhatia. After modelling, Akshay decided to step into the Film Industry. Since his family was not associated with films and he did not know anyone from the industry, he started off by assisting Jayesh Sheth, well known photographer in order to meet people from the industry. After working with him for eight months, instead of remuneration he asked him to shoot his portfolio.

Akshay then began dropping his photos in producer´s offices. At first Akshay could not really afford to send multiple copies so he used to ask for his photos to be returned. But whenever he went back, he would be told that the photos had been misplaced. That’s when he came up with the idea of taking giant sized prints for auditions so that no one could say they had been displaced! Those large prints worked in his favour and that is when he got his first film.

Akshay made his first appearance as the lead actor opposite Rakhee and Shantipriya in Saugandh in the year 1991. In the same year, he acted in Kishore Vyas-directed Dancer, for which he received mixed reviews. In the following year, he starred in a suspense thriller “Khiladi”, directed by Abbas Mustan for which he gained popularity.

Celebrity weddings are always an amazing affair, but Akshay was yet to seal his place as one. Akshay primarily starred in action films and was particularly known for his appearances in the “Khiladi series”, which included Khiladi (1992), Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi (1997), International Khiladi (1999), and Khiladi 420 (2000). He also starred in other action films such as Mohra (1994), Elaan (1994), Suhaag (1994), Sapoot (1996), Keemat (1998), Angaaray (1998) and Sangharsh (1999)

After being established as an action hero, Akshay also gained fame for his drama, romance and comic roles. He started gaining popularity for his performances in rom-com films like Yeh Dillagi (1994), Dhadkan (2000), Jaan-E-Mann (2006) and Namastey London (2007) as well as drama films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001), Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005) and Patiala House (2011) . In the year 2008, Akshay Kumar had his television debut as the host of the Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi. In 2009, Kumar established the Hari Om Entertainment production company. In 2008, the University of Windsor conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law on Kumar for his contribution to Indian cinema. The following year he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India. In 2011, Asian Film Awards honored the actor for his outstanding achievements in cinema. There was already a buzz as to who the lucky lady would be in the Akshay Kumar marriage.

The Phattar Ke Phool actress, Raveena Tandon, was the heart throb to a millions in the 90’s. The duos love bloomed on the sets on Mohra, directed by Rajiv Rai in the year 1994. The couple sizzled on screen and off screen as well. The couple were seen together in many public events and also acted in several other films together. There were rumours that Akshay and Raveena had secretly tied the knot but there were no reports that confirmed it.

In an interview, Raveena stated that Akshay had promised to marry her and they got engaged in a temple secretly. Raveena also stopped signing films, as she wanted to be a house wife after they got married. She also revealed in the interview that while Akshay was engaged to her, he also got engaged to two other girls and he kept his engagement a secret as he feared losing his female fans and thought the news could ruin his career.

During their courtship phase, in 1996 Akshay-Raveena–Rekha starrer Khiladiyon ka Khiladi was released. With Akshay and Rekha’s closeness becoming the talk of the town. Raveena who was already dealing with the flamboyant nature of Akshay could not take this infidelity anymore and finally was left heartbroken and shattered. She also stated that loyalty meant everything to her and couldn’t forgive him anymore. Neither Rekha nor Akshay admitted to their relationship.

The Akshay Kumar – Shilpa Shetty Affair was one of the most talked about affairs in Bollywood. The romance between the couple bloomed during the shooting of Main Khiladi Tu Anari. The scoring chemistry between them in the ‘Chura Ke Dil Mera’ song was for everyone to see. Later, they were seen together in Insaaf (1997), Jaanwar (1999) and Dhadkan (2000). Shilpa Shetty was madly in love with Akshay and wanted to marry him. Sources say that Shilpa Shetty lost her virginity to him. The couples were under media speculation for more than a year. Even after the Twinkle – Akshay Kumar wedding, he was again in the news for having an affair with Priyanka Chopra who was working with him in Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Aitraaz and Waqt. Neither Priyanka nor Akshay commented on their much spoken affair. There was a phase when these two were believed to be together and very close but Akshay’s wifey Twinkle Khanna objected to it. Akshay Kumar fell in love with Twinkle Khanna on the sets of International Khiladi, which was the beginning of journey of their love life and the Twinkle – Akshay Kumar marriage. There after the couple did one more film Zulmi which was also a commercially successful film. After knowing each other for few years the couple decided to stick together forever.

Akshay Kumar marriage was a private affair and not many knew about it. The two got married on January 7, 2001, in designer duo as well as friends, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s residence, amidst a gathering of just 50 people, and that too in just two hours. Amir Khan, Amar Singh and renowned director Dharmesh Darshan were the few people on the guest list. Twinkle Khanna finished her pending films before saying good bye to her short lived film career. The couples were blessed with a son Aarav Bhatia born on 15th Sep 2002 and a daughter Nitara Khanna Bhatia born on 25th Sep 2012.
