Leyndell, Royal Capital stands as one of the most imposing and rewarding locations in Elden Ring, serving as the seat of power in the Lands Between. Gaining entry requires careful preparation, including defeating major shardbearers and overcoming a formidable guardian boss. This guide outlines the primary path, essential prerequisites, combat strategies, and even unconventional methods to reach this golden city.
Why Leyndell Matters in Your Journey
Entering Leyndell unlocks progression toward endgame content, including encounters with legendary figures and powerful artifacts. The city houses critical story elements, unique weapons, and Sites of Grace that facilitate exploration of the Altus Plateau region. Beyond its narrative significance, Leyndell offers high-level enemies yielding substantial runes, ideal for character leveling around level 70 or higher.
Core Prerequisites: Securing Two Great Runes
To even approach the sealed gateway to Leyndell, your Tarnished must hold at least two Great Runes. These are obtained by defeating shardbearing demigods, specifically Godrick the Grafted and Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.
- Godrick’s Great Rune: Defeat Godrick in Stormveil Castle, located in Limgrave. This boss fight demands mastery of parrying or aggressive dodging.
- Restoration: After victory, travel to the Divine Tower of Limgrave via the Grand Lift of Dectus (requires both medallions) or other means to activate the rune.
- Rennala’s Great Rune: Progress to Liurnia of the Lakes, obtain the Academy Glintstone Key, infiltrate Raya Lucaria Academy, and overcome Rennala’s phases involving illusory students and a dragon communion spell.
With both runes equipped and Godrick’s restored, the massive doors at the Capital Outskirts will unseal, allowing passage.
Navigating to the Capital Outskirts
Begin your ascent from the Outer Wall Battleground Site of Grace in the Altus Plateau. This area is accessible after activating the Grand Lift of Dectus, which demands the Dectus Medallion halves from Fort Haight (Limgrave) and Fort Dominula (Altus Plateau).
From the grace point:
- Mount Torrent and ascend the stone staircase adjacent to the lift.
- Traverse the wooded path northward, avoiding or swiftly bypassing packs of enemies like ballista-wielding soldiers.
- Arrive at Capital Outskirts, where the two Great Runes prerequisite is verified.
If doors remain shut, double-check your inventory for the runes and ensure Godrick’s is powered at a Divine Tower.
Conquering the Draconic Tree Sentinel
The primary barrier is the Draconic Tree Sentinel, a colossal knight patrolling the main gate. This boss wields a massive dragon greatsword, shield, and lightning attacks, making it a test of patience and positioning.
Battle Preparation
| Aspect | Recommendations |
|---|---|
| Level | 70+ with upgraded weapons (+12 or higher) |
| Armor | Medium load for roll speed; lightning resistance talismans |
| Summon | Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche to distract |
| Consumables | Physick with Opaline Bubbletear and Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear |
Combat Phases and Strategies
Phase 1: Stay on Torrent for mobility. Dodge sweeping sword arcs by rolling perpendicular and punish with hits to the legs. Avoid the charged shield bash by sprinting sideways.
Lightning AOE: When the boss rears back, dismount and sprint away to evade the ground slam and ensuing bolts.
Phase 2 (50% HP): The Sentinel gains aerial lunges and a massive lightning spear. Bait ground combos, then counter. Use poison mist from range if underleveled, as it applies status without aggro.
Victory yields the Dragon Greatclaw katana and Dragonclaw Shield, both excelling in bleed and lightning builds. Proceed to Capital Rampart Grace post-fight.
Beyond the Gates: Initial Exploration
Ascend the lift to East Capital Rampart Grace, offering a panoramic view of Leyndell’s spires. From here, descend into the city proper, encountering golden knights, basilisks, and precursor spirits. Key early pickups include the Goldmask prayerbook side path.
Alternative Entry Methods
While the standard route is recommended, creative players explore detours or exploits.
Deeproot Depths Portal Route
This lengthy path suits Ranni questline followers:
- Defeat two shardbearers (e.g., Radahn via stars or alternate).
- Access Nokron via Radahn defeat or wrong warp.
- Conquer Valiant Gargoyles, descend to Deeproot Depths.
- Reach Prince of Death’s Throne; portal deposits at Leyndell start (closes post-Maliketh).
Glitch Entries via Divine Bridge
Start with the trap chest in Weeping Peninsula’s Tower of Return (northeast of Isolated Merchant’s Shack). It teleports to Divine Bridge.
- Pixel-Perfect Swing Glitch: Acquire Erdtree Branch (Tree Avatar nearby, weak to fire). Precise jump from bridge edge to lower platform, activate elevator to Roundtable Hold, then navigate.
- Wrong Warp Skip: From Divine Bridge Grace, open map while positioned specifically to clip into city sections.
Note: Glitches may patch out; use at own risk for challenge runs.
Common Pitfalls and Pro Tips
- Underleveled? Farm runes at Windmill Village or use sacred tears for upgrades.
- Stuck on Sentinel: Bleed weapons like Rivers of Blood shred its poise.
- Forget Runes? Fast travel to check; Rennala is quickest second if Godrick done.
- Explore Altus thoroughly for Scadutree Fragments boosting future DLC scaling.
