Aishwarya Rai Wedding: Celebrating 9 Years Of Togetherness

Aishwarya Rai with Abhishek

One of the most recognisable Indian faces in the world, Aishwarya Rai was nothing less than a phenomenon, and it’s no wonder that the news of the Abhishek – Aishwarya Rai wedding made all the news! One of the most popular and one of the most talented actors to have come out of India, she was simply sensational. The stunning beauty, with her eyes of shades of green and blue, first rose to prominence as the runner up for the Miss India Pageant. Later that same year, she claimed another trophy as Miss India World 1994.

Soon after this she was flooded with offers to act in a number of films, and the vibrant star made her acting debut in 1997 in the Tamil movie Iruvar, which was directed by the South Indian virtuoso Mani Ratnam, who has since then always found her to be a favourite choice as an actor. She entered the realms of Bollywood with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya in the same year. She attained commercial success in 1998 with her memorable film Jeans. And though she has had a mixed bag of successes and box office failures, since then she hasn’t looked back. With a portfolio filled with all manner of awards, ranging from various screen awards, Filmfare awards, IIFA awards and even official awards from governments such as the Padma Shri from India and the Order des Arts et des Lettres from France; this is one seriously talented lady we’re talking about. And Ash, as she is affectionately referred to by her fans, is also known for being a friendly and amicable person to work with. And also for being one of the most devastatingly attractive women to ever walk the planet. So, obviously when the subject of the Abhishek – Aishwarya Rai wedding comes up, people are going to perk their ears and listen.

The Relationship

The lucky man she chose to be with – and do we mean lucky, do you remember Taal? The vision of beauty that she was in that movie still sends tingles down our spine – was none other than Abishek Bachchan, the prodigal son of the Megastar and living legend Amitabh Bachchan. As she rose to prominence in her professional career, people would comment on her meteoric rise to fame. The star studded couple first met on the sets of Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke in the year 2000, though there was nothing between them from the start. As colleagues and fellow professionals they shared a good, but purely working relationship. And besides, our lady Rai was dating Sallu bhai at the time, and Prince Bachchan was engaged to Karisma Kapoor.

It was only six years later in 2006, after having broken off other entanglements, when he actually started to fall for the gorgeous Ms. Rai, when they were working together for Dhoom 2, after having worked together in seven films. There had previously been rumours that stated that they had started dating during the shooting of the film Umrao Jaan, but the celebrity couple still remains tight lipped about confirming these rumours. After the shooting for the film Dhoom 2 was wrapped up, the couple finally started to date each other publicly. And as time passed, their love grew deeper and stronger. It is even famously said that as they got more serious in their relationship, there is notable incident that happened during the shooting of an emotional scene in the movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, the erstwhile younger Bachchan was not able to control his sudden outpouring of tears. He apparently bawled so much that it affected noted director Karan Johar’s tear glands as well, prompting him to join in. It was the kindness of Mickey Contractor, that jovial soul, who took him out for a long drive, which allowed him to finally confess his feelings of love for Aishwarya Rai to himself. A teeny step towards the Abhishek – Aishwarya Rai wedding had been made.

The Engagement

The Wedding

While the dynamic duo were shooting for Mani Ratnam’s Guru, Aishwarya and Abhishek stayed in New York, He would apparently spend a lot of time dreaming about exactly how he was going to propose to her, and how their marriage would be. When he thought the time was right, he popped the all important question to her, after the release of the film, on the very same balcony. To his great joy, the fair lady gave a very enthusiastic yes in reply. The couple were to be officially engaged at a later date, the 14th of January 2007, in a Roka ceremony that was held at Aishwarya Rai’s Juhu residence in Mumbai. It was the shehenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan himself who announced the impending happy news to the world. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai kept their upcoming wedding dates under the cover though, because she had some astrological misfortune in the form of her manglik having issues. Obviously, the vagaries of the stars could not do anything to stop this union from happening, and a solution to her manglik dosh was found in the form of certain rituals and pujas.

Clothes And Accessories

The Bachchan clan went all out for the wedding trousseau, having ordered some almost priceless Banarasi lehengas for the event. They ordered 21 shagun sarees that are almost worth 2.33 lakhs, which are a mix comprising of mostly ‘georgette and bandez’ sarees in a variety of hues ranging from scarlet, pink, royal blue, mustard and magenta, all of them with exquisitely rendered pearl and stone work, so you can be sure that there were some amazingly dressed women in the party. Another 11 sarress worth almost Rs. 50,000 each were also purchased by people close to the Bachchans, on the orders of Amitabh Bachchan himself, during their visit to the holy temple city with their soon to be daughter in law, Aishwarya Rai. The ‘Anmol’ Banarasi lehenga that was most likely to be worn by Aishwarya during her wedding took almost a month of work. The lehenga was handcradted by a master weaver who is a legend in incorporating elements of the signature Banarasi style. It was an interplay of Banarasi Zardozi work and Kolkatan-Jaipuri embroidery which was on a silken base which was coupled with elaborate craftwork to give it an almost starry design. It looked like a vision of silken delight. That lehenga itself is estimated to cost over 2 lakhs, but since the maker was not forthcoming about the price we can never be sure.

The superb golden yellow saree worn by Aishwarya Rai at her wedding was a wonderful example of Kanjeevaram sarees and was selected by the blushing bride herself. Costing over a lakh as a bas price, it was further embellished through the efforts of noted designer Neeta Lulla, who also happens to be Aishwarya’s favourite designer. She used Swarovski crystals and golden threads of the highest purity to rework it into a true work of high couture sartorial art.

As for the dashing groom, his attire was designed by Kolkatta based designer Shabari Dutta, who was sourced for the job by Aishwarya’s mother. All of Abhishek Bachchan’s clothes, which were amazingly classy and truly filled with aristocratic flair, were gifted to him from the fabulous bride’s family. Shabari Dutta is well known for working miracles with sherwanis, amrakha and achkan and even in shawls, and pulled out all stops for the occasion. And after being given free rein to choose any colour except black, which is inauspicious in accordance with Hindu customs, she chose to go with a cream off white sherwani that was simply resplendent. The actual wedding dress he wore was designed and made my Mumbai based tailors Kay Sons. The magnificent golden sherwani was crafted using traditional means and weaves, lovingly stitched by master weavers in Varnasi.

All the dresses exuded a rich sense of glamour and grandeur, with all the colours and hues purely being designed to accentuate the already massive charms of the beautiful bride and handsome groom.

Aishwarya Rai Wedding - aishwaraya mehndi

With noted mehndi designers being roped in to adorn the new soon to be couple’s hands, the mehndi sessions went on swimmingly. Aishwarya looked bridally beautiful in a absolutely divine pink lehenga that was embellished with beautiful threadwork. She looked like a true vision of loveliness with a garden worth of flowers being her only accessories in lieu of the usual layers of jewellery. She was accompanied by friends, family and even members of who would soon to be added to her family, including Jaya Bachchan and Shwetha Bachchan. The mehendi ceremony proved to be a vital one, because all the male members of the two clans, including the groom, had to be adorned with the inticate patterns of mehndi. There is not much known about their sangeet, but given the extravagance of the wedding as a whole, we can only imagine that it was a rocking affair that lit the proof on fire, metaphorically speaking. We can only assume that the numerous guests, that included the likes of Kajol, Preity Zinta, Prem Chopra, Sikandar Kher, J.P. Dutta and Yash Chopra, enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Everyone on the guest list apparently kept a very low profile, so that news and details about the wedding would stay private.

The wedding proper took place on the 20th of April, 2007 at the residence of Amitabh Bachchan, which he named Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai. With a mix of traditions, the wedding was full of North Indian and Bengali influences, with most of the ceremonies catering to the rites and traditions of the Bunt community, to which Aishwarya Rai belongs.

The baraat was led by King Bachchan who greeted Aishwarya in her Mercedes, which was followed by Prince Abhishek Bachcan riding in on his white horse with fine panache to arrive at the mandao in classic style – we wonder if you can buy such a sense of fashion; he looked so cool, as did the godi, or horse, which also deserves some credit in the matter, or so we feel! There were dancers galore as Prince Bachchan shyly peaked out from under his flowery veil, awwww! A noted face that took part with gusto in the song and dance was another one of the royalty of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt, who was one among many other Bollywood celebrities who attended the functions with all of the customary gusto that has been associated with Bollywood since time immemorial.

As to the actual Abhishek – Aishwarya Rai marriage ceremony itself, it was held observing a mix of several tradtions, namely North Indian, Bengali and Bunt traditions, which are part and parcel of Aishwarya’s community. Both bride and groom looked stunning, as one would expect from what was to soon become the superpower couple of India, our very own response to Brangelina. Decked in a traditional and beautiful golden yellow Kanjeevaram saree, which had been worked over with Swarovski crystals and intricate layering of golden threads, Aishwarya Rai looked like a radiant vision of loveliness. She had her hair braided in a long plait, covered with a calm explosion of a profusion of jasmine flowers. She was also adorned with some gorgeous 22 karat gold jewellery that was studded with diamonds that seemed to blaze forth with their own inner light, which also included a supremely tasteful emerald and gold armband.

Abhishek Bachchan truly looked like a scion of some royal house in his regal avatar. He looked the very picture of the elegant monarch in a stunning cream coloured sherwani that was embellished with some gorgeous golden threadwork all over the body of the fabric. He also wore a long string of pearls along with a triple chain of what we assume are emeralds. He completed this look with a superb pagdi that was of a matching hue with the rest of his outlook, it was also held together and finished perfectly with a superb kalangi that was beaded with green stones; which we can again assume to be emeralds, we think it’s a safe bet.

Happily Ever After

There are some naysayers and trolls who keep niggling away at the happy couple like so many minnows, who say that their marriage is a complete mismatch. Some people consider the junior Bachchan to not have the same level of star power as his high flying wife, considering his rather relatively dull career. But like any smart people, the couple has studiously ignored all such claptrap and have spent the last eight years together, happy as two peas in a pod. In fact, they brought another member into their family in 2011 with the birth of their beautiful daughter, Aaradhya.
